I'm trying to find a decent search and destroy/team deathmatch style FPS, not a battle royale or large scale battlefield. Simply a FPS with medium/small sized maps with 6-10 players per team, similar to COD 2019.

It seems there is nothing and those that are active, are just your standard battlepass, skin slapped sloppy **** put together with negative reviews because of bugs or invasive anti cheat. Any suggestions would be awesome as from what I'm seeing, it's kind of a dead genre unless you jump into one of the few that are played by the masses such as Apex, Valorant or the current COD, which none appeal to me.

The space definitely feels stale now - as you said, large-scale battle royale and cosmetics driven games have really taken over.

I still play MW19 occasionally for that fix but often run into blatant hackers.

I'd like to give The Finals a try, but that has a lot going on from the gameplay I've watched.

Even CS lost some of it's FPS 'purity' (for lack of a better word) with the introduction of skins/ loot boxes, but you can't argue with the model - they absolutely rake it in.

Part of me just feels like I'm getting old though - miss the days of CS:S, COD4 Promod etc.

I still play CODMW3 daily, and there are plenty of players, even on hardcore modes (which is all I play), yes there is a fair few skin using kids, but with the mic muted and the chat disabled, it's good enough fun.
I have stayed well clear of BO6 though, as apparently that is full of cheating mouthy kids using autoaim on consoles? And in general buggy, and not as polished? I will continue to play this till there isn't matches, but as I say it's very quick to get into a variety of ones that are available.

CS 2 or Valorant tick the boxes but if your playing solo and are average. Expect a toxic experience.

Killing Floor 3 just released if you want a co-op / group old skool fps.

Have you played Overwatch? I know it's gotten slated and doesn't have the best reputation because of cancelled game modes/promises, but it's one of those games that I just can't quit and have played it since launch, and I think it's in a pretty good position right now if you have no investment in the history and/or don't care about why it got slated at the time that it did, which at this point the reasons are 1-2 years old now, and the community has largely moved on to accept what it is today.

It does have a battlepass and cosmetics, but you can completely ignore that and just play the game for the gameplay, and there's no actual gameplay content locked behind the BP.

Have you played the Space Marine 2 PvP? It's small arenas, 6v6, quick games. Quake style I guess. I haven't played loads but enjoyed it when I have.

Give the finals ago.
I know @t2na and I are on a sweet discord that would play with you.

Otherwise insurgency is the winner until battlefield comes out I suspect.

FPS is alive and well in VR. There are a few VR games like Onward, Contractors, or Pavlov that have those sorts of features, and also support mods.

Breachers is another VR combat game which is 6 vs 6.

A lot of expectation on BF6 right now it seems. I wonder if it will have much in the way of team deathmatch modes or all the focus is going to be on the usual large scale/br stuff
£70 for the game hopefully its decent. for £70 i want a 6 foot blonde and happy times. pubg still is the best skilled fps game period. also in november ish time its getting updated to unreal engine 5. so fingers crossed its all good.
