I’ve got a shelter built in the garden with some seating that I’ve temporarily put out gas BBQ whilst I changed the furniture on our patio

Now it’s in there, it looks a good home for it but I’m wondering if it would be suitable

Could it the BBQ be used in the shelter?

As long as your sensible from a fire risk point of view should be fine.

What you will find is that the smoke will go into your chipboard roof bit, and you'll get a nasty sticky black patch of smokey grease you'll never get off.

I was wondering if it would be worth putting a chimney on the roof to let smoke / heat out? Would that help

Something like a gutted out cooker hood would probably work... Would need a simple cap on the outside to stop water coming in when not in use.

You just need to make sure there is sufficient clearance above the exit point to allow a draft of air across the top which will then draw the fumes up the hood and out.

I have a bbq shack, I don't get any noticeable marks on the roof from the smoke. It is ventilated around the top of the walls, so it kind of blows out anyway.

Pizza oven however was a different matter. Having the chimney close to roof and cooking on wood, that did make a dark mark. I always move the pizza oven out of the shack when using it now.

That looks really smart what you've done with that space, the outside picture looks really inviting and cosy.

Thanks, it was somewhere for Covid. Was more open at the front to start but developed for more privacy the longer we’ve had it

I’ll give it a go, see how it goes. We don’t generally go to extravagant with what we cook and see how it goes

You need an opening on the other side to the slats - preferably up high - to create a cross draft. Or as mentioned, open the roof and plop a gutted out kitchen extractor over the bbq to give the smoke multiple escape routes (eBay maybe for a cheapo non working unit) As it is currently I’m pretty sure you’ll get smoked out, unfortunately.

A carbon monoxide monitor would be a good idea while it is in use. You may have plenty of ventilation but bang a nail in high up on the wall and hang a monitor on it.

Spicy chicken kebabs, sausages with mulled ale, wine or cider in the depth of winter with the heat of the barbecue in the shelter. Sounds magic.
