Tsunami hits Russia's Far East after powerful earthquake

A powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, generating a tsunami of up to 4 metres (13 feet), prompting evacuations and damaging buildings, officials said.

News outlets are saying it was an 8.8 now. That's a massive earthquake, will take 12 hours for the waves to hit NZ.

Looks like the effect for NZ will mostly be temporary unusual changes to ocean currents and tidal movements, etc. rather than waves as such.

that's huge! Looks like some places in Russia have already been hit by the tsunami, hopefully people have had enough time to get out where there have been warnings.

Sign of the time I guess but I was watching BBC news this morning about the earthquake, it was going on for about an hour talking about the tsunami threat to Hawaii and Japan and there was absolutely no mention of the effect it had on Russia despite it taking place off the coast of Russia

Probably because that area of Russia is sparsely populated.

The epicentre is close to the only decent sized city (petropavolovsk).

That area (kamchatka) is full of volcanoes.

Everyone's phones here had a national alert warning at around 5pm today but no dramas so far. This is quite interesting if you like reading about tsunami alerts

e: weird, that link suggests it was late morning or early afternoon. Just LOL if I get tsunamie'd because my phone went on a go slow :lol:

I don’t think you can over egg a tsunami from one of the largest earthquakes recorded. Some of the initial videos are terrifying.
