Hi all

Could you please advise which VR would be best given the current PC specs or standalone.

Current PC specs: Water Cooled i9 14900K, RTX4080 Super, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD

He wants to do recording of gameplay and I want to be able to play now and then with really good quality graphics.

Please let me know if you need any other details.

I have looked up options but won't post them as I don't want biased opinions.

Money is an object lol

Thank you very much for looking

Well, the Quest 3 is probably the best value for money and do all that you need. The Pico 4 might be good for you too. Some people say that PCVR is better on the Pico 4 than the Quest 3. (No point in getting the Pico 4 ultra as it doesn't provide anything extra for PCVR over the regular Pico 4)

After that, You are probably going to have to go second hand to get something. The Pimax Crystal light was on sale recently, not sure if it's still available though. Even at sale price it would probably be over budget.

Not sure there any other options out there unless you go are ok buying older headsets like the Valve Index. Maybe the PSVR 2 with the PC adapter might work for you.

So I was thinking quest 3 or pico 4.
He is 9 years old. I have read the pico is a lot better weight distribution.....don't want him ending up with a bent neck like a swan lol.
Do you know if its worth getting the extra sensors for the pico (can't remember the name of them)? Also with PCVR is it a wire going from the PC?

Most people would advise you not to get a VR headset for someone that young. If you are getting it for yourself and letting your son use it supervised and strictly limited times, then that might be ok.

One of the problems with somebody that young is getting the headset to fit properly. Their IPD is too small for most headsets. And sure out of the box the Pico 4 might have better weight distribution, that problem can be solved with after market headstraps on the Quest 3.

There are pros and cons to both headsets. If you ever decide to use the headsets standalone, the Quest 3 is the best choice.

As for getting the motion trackers(extra sensors) that's up to you to decide. It depends on your use case, what games you play, etc. etc.

PCVR is playing your game on the computer and displaying it on the headset. The connection to the PC can be wired or Wireless. It's almost getting to the stage now where wireless is the preferred option.

Yeah I understand the age point....I really do. Time management is most of my at home life these days :-(
Stupid question but when you say playing on the computer do you mean using mouse etc or still via the VR controllers?

It depends on the game. It could be a controller(gamepad), a hotas, a steering wheel, the keyboard or the VR controllers. Like for Beat saber you would be using the VR controller. For racing games the steering wheel or gamepad. For Flight Sims and Elite Dangerous, you might be using Keyboard, mouse, Hotas or Controllers.

Thanks for replies.
I have set up a youtube but we will be making stuff together. Not just sit him there and disappear. I get your points. Also with the VR it would be a case of record a game and then do some editing. Really just my simplest solution to get him learning useful stuff. He's already done half a stage one Python coding certification.
Not answered my question as definitively as I'd hoped but basically seems like either if they both stream from PC and can take peripherals.
Thanks again for now....

I think your question has been answered very definitively. The best all rounder within your budget is the Quest 3. If you were solely focused on PCVR there might be a case for the Pico 4. But since you will be using it standalone too, then there is really only one option, the Quest 3. As ShiWarrior said above get the Quest 3 and buy the comfort mods for it, better headstrap, facial interface etc. And even with buying those mods, it will still be well inside your budget of £700.

OK OK I'm sold.....jeez. :-)

So this is Xmas present territory.
I seem to be seeing that there is no chance a new VR will be coming out from the main makers before then...... has anyone else heard anything or have any reason I should wait to get one?

Nothing obvious to wait on.

When you get it, before activating, make sure you contact a friend/relative with one and have them give you a referral, it'll be £23 free meta credit to get your started (and the same to them).
