No sound through headphones after PC crash

Hello everyone.

Not sure I'm in the right place in terms of forums posts so if someone could direct me where I should be posting that would be apricated, but onto the problem.

I've had the same PC for about 3-4 years now. No issues with anything really. Was a pre built machine so haven't requested anything fancy in terms of audio output, never had speakers, have always used USB headsets, specifically Logitech G35s.

Which I realise are ancient and are no longer supported by Logitech but they have worked for the best part of a decade with no problems.

Except one night a week ago or so now I had a hard crash. PC completely unresponsive. Now usually I would just hold down the power button until it turned off, except this time I used the switch on the back of my case directly on my power supply.

When I turned the PC back on the headset was no longer recognised as 'Logitech G35' on my sound mixer but now listed as 'USB Advanced Audio Device.' I messed around with old drivers software etc and nothing worked, so they have been substituted for a friends USB headset which work fine.

If anyone has a fix for this that would be appreciated as well because everything I've done so far hasn't yielded any positive results.

My main concern now is that I have no output for my Quest 3 headset when linked to my PC, I have reinstalled software, drivers and what have you but nothing seems to work. Looking at the audio channels when there is something playing you can clearly see them moving so I'm pretty sure that sound is being produced but just not to my Quest. These being:

Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
U2579G6 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)

The Quest channel is specifically labelled has Headphones whether I am linked to the PC by cable or by the Airlink.

This post isn't related to the headset, I realise that it may just be the headset that's at fault and not my PC, but I was just wondering if it was possible that I could have damaged something when I turned my power supply off directly instead of using the power button on top of the case, as I feel like I've done some kind of damage to something hardware related.

According to Windows there is a problem with my drivers but it is unable to solve the issue. As far as I'm aware everything is up to date.

Any other information that could be helpful for you please let me know.

Cheers

If your PC hard crashed, then switching off at the back of the PSU wouldn't have messed it up just by doing that. Holding the front power switch till a hard reset happened would have been similar to doing that. in my view anyway.

Saying that, something has happened. I'd say there's an issue with whatever usb device was plugged in, and the resulting short locked the PC. I say this as your friends audio device is working. So it's something Quest related or driver related for the Quest. Windows drivers and registry settings can get borked, and just simply installing over an already existing installation might not actually fix anything. You could uninstall everything, then run throught the registry for anything quest or logitech related, deleting entries as you go - but that's not for the faint of heart. Or for someone who isn't prepared to install windows again from scratch.

I don't specifically know how the quest does its audio, does it have its own audio?

Yeah I felt the same about the PSU being turned off buts its the only thing that's happened recently that I can think that would have affected something.

All I know in terms of quest audio it just works like any wireless headphones work. When linked to the PC its assigned its own channel in the volume mixer, other than that I couldn't really tell you.

Well that makes sense as to why a reinstallation might no necessarily work. Ill have a go at the registry stuff, not my strong suit like but the wife is away for the night and I wanted to sit and play Half life Alyx uninterrupted

I've been considering a full format of my PC tbh, its a bit sluggish these days. Ill sit and have a mess about and get back to you for more help when I completely break my PC

Don't go into the registry and start deleting things blindly. That's not the correct approach.

Enable "show hidden devices" in device manager and post a screenshot with the sound devices tree expanded. Do any devices show as unknown?

You can also run sfc /scannow in an administrative command prompt/PowerShell/terminal to check the OS integrity.

Are any errors being logged in event viewer? Go into administrative events and filter by critical and error.

OK, in terms of device manager, there were no unknown devices. For whatever reason I cant get a screenshot to attach to my post.

Sound, video and game controllers:
  • Corsair VOID ELITE USB Gaming headset
  • NVIDIA High Definition Audio
  • NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM)
  • Oculus Virtual Audio Device
  • Realtek High Definition Audio
  • Steam Streaming Speakers
  • USB Advanced Audio Device
Then 4 hidden USB Advanced Audio Devices.

I ran the /scannow, it found and repaired corrupted files. I tried the oculus again after this and a reinstallation of the related software but it didn't change, As well as trying my old headset that was still listed as USB Advanced Audio Device.
In terms of errors in administrative events. In the last month there were 12k errors logged. I filtered it to the day of my headset not working and was given 4k errors. You have an idea what I should be specifically looking for?

The most common errors are:
  • Crypto-NCrypt
  • WMI-Activity
  • TPM-WMI
  • DistributedCOM
  • StorPort
All with ERROR stated as their level.

Dont know if that will help you at all.

If you go into the properties of the hidden audio devices, what do they show? Malfunctioned or just a missing driver?
All hidden devices have the following in their device status:

Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

Apparently all the drivers are up to date from 15/7

Uninstall all of these and reboot. Do they come back?

They have not came back after a reboot
That's at least something. If you plug in the headset with device manager open, does device manager refresh after it's plugged in? This is for troubleshooting the Logi headset.

The Quest audio output may be something different. What devices do you see under sound settings? Make sure show hidden and show disabled devices is enabled (right click the white background in the playback tab).

Aye device manage refreshes when the headset is plugged in but its still listed as USB Advanced Audio Device

The playback tab has:
  • Headset Earphone - the ones I'm using currently which are working
  • U2879G6 NVIDIA High Definition Audio
  • Headphones - Oculus Virtual Audio Device
  • Speakers - Realtek high definition Audio
  • Speakers - Steam Streaming Speakers (Currently disabled)
You think the steam speakers being disabled is the issue? I've never seen those before until today but I've never went looking with me never having a problem

I'm assuming they are referring the Steam the app as I was using steam VR and not something else

I have enabled the steam streaming speakers and I have sound through my oculus....cant believe it was so simple. They are shown enabled in the device manager but were set to disabled in the playback tab.

Really appreciate the help though mate.
