Hi all

Looking for a good protection paint for external use , to paint soffit and facia boards (wood) I did try salodin extra I think it was called. Tried it on wood door frame outside which the wood is not in the best condition whist it was ok the paint it was hard to work with. Quite thick etc .is that normal ? Also the tin I bought was an online retailer and quite small..

Is this stuff the go to stuff for painting soffits and facias ? Is there anything that I can pick up in wicks/bnq that's highly recommended.

I want to be able to do a light sand on the boards very light and then put the paint In a tray and use a roller to go over it all . Use a small brush for the edges and interacte bits

Thanks.. I have black floplast square type guttering which I did install on the front porch 3-4 years ago . I did buy the same guttering for the top of the house front and rear although at the time i didn't tackle the job . This year I want to replace the guttering at the top and whilst I have the guttering off give the soffits and facias a paint .

Its not a massive house so should be fine doing this..

Anything to look out for ?

I am going to lightly sand (120) just to remove any anomolies in the wood not agressive..then that stuff you mention looks ok.

Looks like people reccomend bedec barn paint and colour athricite ? Which looks to be a dark grey. Water based ? Does this stuff give good protection ?

Looking online it's quite expensive for 2.5 @ £40 on eBay . Is this normal for external paint ?

At the moment the colour on mine hasn't been painted in a while and it's natural wood colour .

Am I going to need a primer for this ? And is this stuff ok to roll on ?

The Bedec MSP stuff is what I use, which is most definitely an all in one solution including primer.

For sand paper, I'd suggest something rougher (80/60) as all you want to do is "flick off" the really lose stuff. It only needs a light sand to remove the bits that will flake anyway.

I haven't actually used the barn paint but others will be along to chip in (search Bedec on here). I get it from Tool Station I think.

Cheers I have looked at some of the reviews on Toolstation for bedec multi surface paint (msp)

Although on the tin it doesn't give into on exterior use and word things like protects wood etc. It seems like a lot of people are using It. Does anyone know if it contains good wood preservative? If not is it worth going over with a wood preservative before I paint with this stuff ?.

The grey colour I was looking at does look good

I refurbed all of my sash windows with it at the last house. I can dig pics out, but it was basically untouched 3 years on. I also used the grey in a high humidity bathroom with zero issue.

I wouldn't oil it as then it won't stick. You could strip back to pure wood and barrentine the whole thing.

Yeh if you have any pics that would be great.

I don't think it's been painted much in its lifetime, ok I may avoid the pre oil then, what about priming ? Do I need to prime it before I look at using the bedec msp?

You don't need to do any priming. The MSP has primer built into it. It's part of the reason it is so expensive.

Nice looks good. :)

Ok great I will look in to it thanks I'll probably go for this stuff.

Bedec Multi Surface Paint Matt Anthracite

Looks to be about £50 for 2.5litres.

Yeah it isn't cheap but I swear by it. Do have a search on here for Bedec, there was a barrage of people saying they use it too....!

Another quick question is it the matt, satin or gloss that you would go for for external soffit and facias ? I assume Matt or satin?

Bedec MSP or their barn paint.

Using the satin barn paint for my soffits and porch. Goes on well and looks great after 2 coats.

I'm going to give it a 3rd coat with a small roller so the effect matches the textured black Alu windows.

Bit of a thread revival as I didn't get round to doing this task yet.

If I feel confident to tackle the job and not make a mess.. I can see that for tins of 2.5 ltr is it best to go for the barn paint or the MSP?

I can see barn paint deals generally cheaper than MSP or does it not matter and stick to MSP? Is there something in the product that the other doesn't have?

Can anyone comment ? Which is better MSP or the barn paint stuff ? Thanks

Having had a quick look on the Bedec website, the only major difference I can see is it says the Barn Paint is acrylic based.

I think either would do the job. I would probably go for the MSP myself on the assumption that it might give a nicer finish because it's not developed just for barns, but this is just guesswork. Perhaps you can buy a small tin of either to see if you're happy with the finish and then go with that?

I'll go with the MSP. Only reason I was asking as that there were some good deals on the barn paint compared to MSP.
