Indeed. Two generations of the xx90 card taking up 3 slots was leaving some SFF owners out of the picture...

Also, Nvidia saves some money since there's is less heatsink whilst raising the starting price from 1.6k to 1.9k!

Think of the money they save shipping around the World, compared to 4090.

They get far more on a pallet/in a shipping container

Despite having a 1080TI AIO for many years there's something about the 4090/5090 AIOs that I'm not sure I trust, the air coolers just seem so good that it's a risk having more points of failure (pump).

but then having to pay for that.. only justifiable if you are absolutely maxing that card, I've yet to see him struggle in anything.

Exactly why I stick to an air solution these days. Fewer bits to go wrong, easier to change out and package when upgrading again and with very effective and quiet air cooling solutions these days.

My feeling is that the type of consumer Nvidia is targeting with an SFF friendly 5090 is not your average gamer but someone who may need the space, works from home, has multiple screens, and needs the 5090 for their workflows, and won’t be spending the asking price for a 6000 pro.

Another thought is also Nvidia is given the AIBs are pushing out 3 slot cards then might as well create something different and give it an Apple-esque level of quality and engineering.

While that might be true, I've lost count over the last few years that I've seen sff builds that had a 4090 or 4080(S) inside. Point being, a lot of smaller cases will take a larger card like those so a 5090 in a 4090ish body would have fitted a lot of sff cases. The current cards seem to be required in a small fraction of cases overall and you're going to need damn good cooling for them. Like I said, no objections to the FE cards being smaller, just an odd choice, time wise.
 
I have the Gigabyte AIO. If you register it when it arrives you get 4 years warranty, which re-assures me on any issues which might arise. The card definitely won't be with me in 4 years, I would have shifted it by then. We'll see what kind of price it fetches when the time comes :). Will probs sell it when it still has 12 months left on warranty to give potential buyers peace of mind.

So far I've loved mine, so much overclocking headroom and amazing at getting the heat off the card and out the case.

At this kind of pricing I would just spend the extra £70 for the Astral, partly for the epeen...

I personally steer clear of AIO's on cards as you have too many things that can go wrong.

Same. I've been air only on everything since after 2010 when I tried custom water with a DD5 pump + 240rad (CPU only) for the first and last time. It was a good experience researching and building it which allowed me to see first hand the effort and expense required vs the few extra degrees gained in cooling.

Full WC is too much of a pain, Also had a full loop around the GTX 900/1000 days but never again, Too much money for too little gain with too much risk.

Yeah, in the rare event a fan fails then the GPU or CPU will overheat and shutdown/warn you. With a WC system or AIO, if that leaks then you're potentially blowing whatever component the AIO/WC was on and then probably one or two other nearby pcbs as well. Pretty risky!

Echoing others, my experience as well. I've had a few custom loops with blocks. I think my last was a 295x2.

The only instance it was worth while was on a Powercolor 5870 Crossfire LCS system I was using for mining back in 2010. Those were running 24/7 in a smaller apartment where cooling and quiet was key -- and I knew I wasn't going to keep them long. It was a really more useful with mGPU.

My current Zotac 5090 Solid is quiet enough and runs with good temps. No sense spending extra or risking long-term failures.

Got the white OC model and yeah it's cool and very quiet, Watercooling aside from the risks IMO just looks too messy now.
