EV general discussion

I want to give EV a go but still hesitant. I have approx £15-20k to get something second hand. Thinking of a Hyundai Kona or similar. Any thoughts? Is it daft buying outright secondhand? It is relaxing a ford fiesta but fancied something slightly larger (but not massive).
Wife has just got the Kona and is enjoying it so far. As it's based on an ICE car it's not as big inside as you'd think though, my ID3 has a bigger boot and a lot more space in the rear while being the same roughly outward dimensions

Yeah the older Kona had an incredibly small interior for its outward dimensions.

My friend as a Kona I think the large centre console between front passenger and driver seat does not help with the sense of space. I know the boot in the Kona is smaller to the Niro

What are you hesitant about firstly? Is it your only vehicle if you are part of a household? What sort of annual mileage do you cover, and it is mainly lots of short journeys or longer ones? You have a Fiesta, are you looking a cross over for a reason or just because it is in your budget? Nothing wrong with the Kona great car, very efficient, good long warranty, but if you are looking to spend £15k+ then you have quite a number of options.

Definitely not daft buying second hand, it’s the best entry point into electric because most EVs suffer huge depreciation because of the incentives to buy a new one.

There is so much choice these days with a budget of 15-20k and pretty much every car on the market has a 7/8 year warranty on their battery and motor.

ID.3, Cupra Born, Nero, Kona, Model 3, Megane e-tech just to list a few great bargains at this price point. I’m pretty sure EV6 and Ionic 5’s are dropping into this range now, that’s a lot of car for the money.

We only have one car which is an EV and that’s been the case for 4 years now. If you can charge at home and an EV exists which suits your needs at a sensible price, it’s a total no brainer IMO. There is so much choice there is bound to be something that does.

Debating between the Model 3 AWD LR vs the Performance (not the latest Highland version)
From my Google-fu, it seems there isn't a lot between them?

Performance has:
Spoiler + red brake calipers, 20 inch rims, +100hp
Internally they seem exactly the same? Both have premium audio + heat pump?

The price differential is about £3k for a 2022 model and both should have Ryzen + Li-ion batteries
Maintenance-wise, the AWD LR is about £150/pa cheaper for insurance, and much cheaper for a tyre change (I expect at least once during the lifetime of my ownership, and at least a £300 difference between the 18/19 and 20 inch tyres)
Fuel cost should be similar/slightly in favour of the AWD LR

To my Chinese brain, and coming from a 440i...it seems that the AWD LR seems to be the more economical choice if I don't need/want the performance of the M3P?

(Barring any changes in circumstances, I'd be keeping the car for ~4-ish years and then swapping out)

If you are not worried about the extra performance (which realistically you can’t really use in the open road), then get the LR. The LR isn’t exactly slow either.

On top of the things you mentioned, the performance has has track mode but comes with less range and a worse ride (which let’s be honest isn’t great to begin with). The allows on the performance are also made of cheese.

I’ve owned a Model 3 and I bought the standard range 60kwh version, the premium to the LR was ~£9k at the time.

The M3P would likely be much more fun but I think the aesthetics of the highland models are far superior

Yeah, the highlands appear a massive step up in quality/ride/NVH compared to their predecessors, but I'm not willing to eat the steep depreciation costs...maybe in a few years I'd swap for the Highland M3P :D

Those are my thoughts, 449HP vs 349HP, I can't use all of those whilst keeping legal
Swapping from my 440i to a M3 LR AWD is nearly cost neutral in terms of capital up front and this includes installing a home EV charger
Added to that cheaper insurance, waaaaaaay cheaper fuelling costs and much cheaper maintenance
Can't really argue with the maths

ID3 has anyone got one, seen one today in my local lidls car park and it looks a lot bigger than i thought which has me intrigued.
Yes the Cupra version. Is there anything specific you asking. They are very big inside and seating is nice. I found the model3 seating too reclined to be comfortable and prefer the more upright seat (taller car helps)

Yeah we picked up a 2022 pro performance model for just under 16k (with 15k miles on it). Much bigger inside than we expected it to be, considering the car's footprint is about the same as our old mazda 3.

Only thing you lose out on is a little bit of boot space - but we're just a couple (no kids) so that won't be an issue.

It's been fine for our first couple of weeks of ownership.

I've had my ID3 for a couple of weeks and yep it's definitely a bit of a TARDIS inside compared to what you'd think.

just how it feels to drive, power, etc etc ...... want to make sure when i finally pull th trigger its for the right EV at the right proce. Budget is around 10k tops

what is the weight difference between aforesaid M-3 AWD LR and Perf, in respect to handling (i4 35 is faster for overtaking 50-70 than heavier more powerful awd )

Eugh, to my shame I've just had a shouting match with a Karen blocking the last charging bay at a busy services with her Juke, don't get me wrong she deserved it, but I shouldn't have taken the bait. I tried starting off politely reminding her that she was stopping people from getting home, but she immediately got ***** with me for "accosting" her about a parking space, and I stupidly responded in kind :( (I blame the 3 hours sleep thanks to the "lovely people" in the hotel room above ours stomping around till 4am, and the long drive for my lack of patience).

How would you guys usually deal with an ICE? As far as I can tell it's not something they can be fined for, do private parking companies tend to issue "invoices" for it? If so I'm surprised they don't have cameras covering the bays, they could make a fortune!
