Rockstar has begun rolling out age verification for UK residents

If this was being done to legitimately protect, I'd be all for it....but its not, its being done for data harvesting. I actually think its something we will see more and more of, probably be ID verification to watch a movie/tv show next.

And it'll only be a matter of time before one of these verification services gets hacked, or it turns out they're not conforming to data hyginene/retention promises and millions of pictures of folk get leaked.

Of course there will be no repercussions for the hack, and the company will be free to continue doing business.

Netflix starts, takes photos of the whole family. Cancels your Netflix and reports you to authorities because your allowing your 15yo to watch robocop. Jailed, job lost, kid ends up homeless, starts drugs.

All because you thought it was the 2014 version.

I had to choose ID or a selfie from my phone to browse a reddit post yesterday. Just loaded up my phone, took a selfie and the verify website used AI to determine if I was over 18.

That sort of IDing I am fine with, not uploading my passport or whateevr onto some third party platform, or entering credit card details.

I read somewhere that people were using Death Stranding characters as their face for something, maybe Reddit?

Absolutely zero chance I'll be showing my mug or driving licence to a video company.

Good, hopefully my 13-year-old will shut up about asking me to allow him to play it. And his friends who allegedly play it won't be able to, and the whole argument can disappear.

If he REALLY wants to play, he can learn how to pirate like I did back in the day. :D
Wouldn't work online, which I assume is the part he wants to play...rather than the 13 year old single player game.

Thing is if, probably more likely when, those details get leaked, and ties a picture of you to contents you've been consuming. Most people have their privacy concerns but it can go much further than that say a young adult with UK residency from a family in a country with a hardline anti-homosexuality position and/or laws - the consequences could be deadly.

This act needs repealing ASAP.

No hope of this actor playing the game then...he barely looks 13, let alone 35 :D
