What "man jobs" have you done today?

On a Sunday too! Madness!
In the past week I've managed to remove a wooden window cill, fill 2 old compost bags with prunings, put a piece of thin board over a strip of new concrete on the drive, which someone else laid, to stop the dog putting his paw prints in it and scanning in some old photos. These jobs were very taxing for me as you can imagine so needed to space them out over the week:). Today was for baby sitting the grandkids.:)

Struggling for motivation lately but I've managed to put half an hour in each evening after work for a few days. Had some sockets I'd pulled cable for years ago and needed to tidy up/finish. Started here (another socket on the other side of the wall in similar state):

Then knocked back the crap render, couple of coats of easi fill and some paint. Annoyingly my paint is one shade off but this is behind furniture and room is yet to be decorated. It'll do, I can plug a fan in for sleep now!

Before switching it on I metered between live, neutral and earth and it seemed suspicious. So investigated, can you spot my mistake?

The neutral in an earth slot was because my friend installing the back box was a bit overzealous with the nail gun and smashed the earth terminal. So no earth pigtail in the second earth slot and I forgot to skip it.

Glad I checked my work rather than just turning it on! Going by the basics paid off.

Didn't rain :(

Floor lifted and all wiring to finish the bedroom electrics have been run and an additional outside socket added.

Got to gun the chimney breast up and down next for sockets and AV

Just lifted the 65" OLED TV down off the cabinet on my own to fiddle with the stand.

Turns out it's tilted backwards on purpose.

Put the TV back on the cabinet. Will wall mount it later in the week.

I had TVs that are the same. I don't quite understand why they think the default position would be so low as to need it pointing up. Do you think it's to minimize reflections (of our ugly mug? ;) )

Apparently it's a fall safety thing!

TBF right now we get our faces at the bottom of the screen, if it were plumb they'd just be in the middle :D

With a heavy heart we've decided the giant African grass at 7 metres tall and starting to bend walls has to go, so made a start an hour ago on cutting this monster down and expect this to last several days.

We have a rescued Yucca that despite being among the giant grass, is shooting up and it may give the variegated 2/3 metre grass a chance as well as that has been shadowed by the African grass.

Spent about an hour on and off, waiting for batteries to charge and my back to stop aching, getting rust off a 3M × 700mm steel sheet and then putting some rust cleaner on it ready for painting. Only 3 more sides to do:(

I've been fettling with the front door lock, as it was jamming when either locking or unlocking with the key. It's one of those ERA locks that you can't really take apart without a special tool to hold it all together, so opening it up and trying to get oil where it could do with it wasn't an option.

As it turns out, some of the screws on the housing felt a little loose, so I've tightened them up. I've also given it a decent squirt of GT85, cleaned any moving parts, then some more GT85 to be sure.

So far the lock is holding up and the lock certainly feels a lot smoother now.

Any thoughts on decking tape vs bitumen paint and does anyone have any recommendations?

Cant comment on decking, as i dont have it (anymore) I have patio slabs

However, i used bitumen paint when i was installing a new feather edge fence

I used bitumen paint on the lower section of the fence posts before installing it in to the ground

7 years later there are no signs of rotting or damage on the bottom of the tantelised fence posts with the bottom section painted with bitumen paint. however they were installed in to holes then filled with postcrete aswel.

Been getting into some DIY and woodwork lately.
Bought a Bosch drill, and today I used it to bore a hole in a tree trunk to make a post to lock my bike to.

Over the past few weekends I've dug a trench from the house to the garage and run 64 mm twinwalled ducting. The difficult bit was digging under a hedge and concrete path, with a total width of about 1.5 m. I dug down around 1 m on each side of the hedge and path, then use a long piece of plastic tube (25mm ducting) with a garden hose attached at one end of the pipe. I cut the other end of the pipe to an angle to give it a pointy end, turned on the hosepipe and then water drilled through the soil under the hedge and path. It made a big muddy mess, but amazingly it worked getting through a lot of very stony earth. Then I cut a 1 m length of the 64 mm ducting, cut it longways at one end and created a tapered end, attached the hose to the other end, and slowly managed to get it through the existing tunnel. The full length of 64 mm ducting then followed the 1 m cut length, using some rope to pull it all through the tunnel.
Whole thing took a lot of elbow-grease!
Now I just need to re-fill the trench, and tidy everything up.
