EV general discussion

Well here's one for you - Storm Floris did a number on us in the Highlands and we've been out of power since 5pm yesterday. A fallen tree took out the step down transformer near the house and going by the number of outages in the area we'll be lucky to get power back today.

My car has 39% charge, enough for say 120 miles and I can Vehicle To Load the freezer and other necessary bits which is cool, but looking at the map of outages it'll be a bit of a gamble to find a charger near that has power to top up the car!

Probably 2 but only if you got a price reduction as the options are not worth nearly full RRP on a used car.

Enhanced autopilot hasn’t historically added that much value.

Acceleration boost is take it or leave it and paint isn’t really worth anything on the used market either.

These isn’t usually a shortage of used model 3’s on the market so use that to your advantage.

Having tried a few, I think the Highland Model 3 is objectively a very good car. It handles well, rides well and is a very competitive price with a high level of equipment (for the base model).

Looks are subjective but I don't think there's anything wrong with it, really. Some design quirks are a bit odd, like the indicators.

It's also supported by the unique and brilliant Supercharger network - something still unmatched after all these years.

At least on the new one, they've switched the free colours around! It's currently grey or blue.
They seem to change it pretty often. Though I was chuffed as I wanted the grey and when I was looking the month previously it was a paid for extra. It really spoke to my cheap-side that the colour I wanted was £Free.99. It was fate.

Not in warranty, has done >60k miles already
In that case, it’s more risk and the dealer model may be a better option.

If the suspension hasn’t been done on the white car, I doubt it will have much life left on it before the upper or lower arms need replacing. It’s a cheap job but a weak point of the car.

There must be some other options between these two which probably represent the cheapest and most expensive on the market?

Yeah, a month ago it was grey and black.

I have been quite tempted by an ionic 5 AWD. Found a nice 22 plate at Hyundai.

Anyone here have an ionic 5 and any views on them ?
I've had mine for 2 years now, its a 23 plate AWD premium edition. Sometimes in 22/23 they increased battery size and BHP, any specific questions? and what spec is the one you are looking at?

The one I'm looking at is a 2022 Ultimate AWD with Tech pack it's a 73Wah battery but that is more than enough range for my use. It's with Hyundai approved used so warranty will not be an issue.

Just general stuff really like how's it to live with, reliability etc. I did read about the in car charger failing quite regularly on some but not sure if that is a big issue or not.

Crunching the numbers, insurance being about equal between both:

Merc is 500/yr servicing MOT and minor repairs or bits that spring up eg brake pads, 160 road tax (was much higher before), 200 a month petrol. Total about 3k /yr.

Looking at autotrader etc it's worth about 22k atm so it's lost 11k value in 4 years, call it approx 3k/yr.

So for the next 3 years if depreciation continues at current rate or a bit slower it'll cost me 18k or thereabouts.

In contrast the BYD Seal is the design with metallic paint, 3+35 lease, 300 admin fee. 424 a month. No road tax or MOT. 300 service once every two years. No petrol. Finance already approved.
So that works out to around 16.8k if I remember my spreadsheet numbers correctly.
Flawed maths (depreciation isn't linear) and a whopping saving of £400 a year leaves three possible scenarios;

1) Deep down you really want an EV and are trying to man maths your way into the decision. If so, go for it.
2) £400 seems like a genuinely decent saving worth changing for. If so, ditch the Merc and BYD ideas and get a used Dacia Sandero.
3) You are getting twitchy about the Merc and want to get rid of it. If so, get whatever you like in warranty and in budget.
It's built in China. Likely with Chinese parts.
Dont be one of those people who thinks buying a tesla is a direct link to musk. Its ridiculous.

I've had 1 person shout nazi at me so far, and a couple spat on my car whilst mumbling some nonsense about musk.
Oh and it was keyed.

These people are pathetic. Musk has nothing to do with the UK... its just stupid.
Haven't you only had it for about a month?! In 26 years I've never had anyone publicly negatively comment about my choice of car let alone spit on it or key it!
I get that. But I find it weird to have some political stance agaisnt Musk (which is justified. I want a Tesla but that doesn't stop me thinking musk is a word I can't say on here) but willingly drive around in a VW who tried to hide how badly their cars were polluting the environment.

I suppose we all have to pick our own poison.
VW got caught, sure, and the defeat device probably took it too far but no car has ever met the test emissions on the road since the invention of the fixed test cycle.

I think it's fine to use a moral decision to avoid certain brands when making a big purchase, whether that moral decision is somewhat blinkered or not is another matter. Everything will be part of SAIC and Geely soon anyway so you may as well get one last moral purchase in while you can... which exactly is a morally acceptable car brand anyway?
