Wanting to shift my RTX 3090 system as is getting a bit long in the tooth (warranty expired) and system is way too big / hot for my currently needs.

What sensible options would provide an upgrade, not looking to spend mega bucks on something like the RTX 5090.

4k 60hz is my only requirement as only game on my TV.

Would something like the 9070xt suffice?

I went from a 3090 to a 9070XT and found it worthwhile, less power use, more performance, FSR4 is impressive.

Only thing I miss is RTX HDR.

I'm only at 3440x1440 so the loss of VRAM wasn't a worry for me, I doubt you'd notice it at 4K but worth checking the games you play frequently.

Even the non-XT 9070 might be enough

If you only problem is heat, then undervolt the 3090. They'll happily run at 0.9-0.95v with no performance loss, drawing about 80-100 less watts.

This. If it is indeed temps and power draw you are most concerned about - undervolting (or curve optimising is a better phrase) is a no brainer these days. I've always done it on all my GPUs, including 3090FE. @Craterloads you got an FE or other?

Yes fe but water cooled. It’s a combination of age, warranty, heat etc. was thinking since they have held such good value could sell and upgrade to a 9070 / XT at not much if any cost.

I'd sell and get the 9070XT as it will produce much less heat and perform much better at little to no cost. It will also have a new warranty whereas if the 3090 fails its a lost opportunity as out of warranty. It's a no brainer as I see it.
