EV general discussion

The morality of car brands is an interesting one.

Most, maybe all other brands go out of their way to fly under the radar and keep the awful things they've all done hidden but musk is there shouting how awful is his from the roof tops, with a megaphone.

All in all nothing Tesla or musk have done is probably worse than several other brands have been guilty of, VW for their emissions scam (along with god knows how many others who never got caught) or the big 3 in America in the early days buying up sustainable local mass transit with all the trams across America then ripping it all up to get people buying petrol guzzling cars.. lobbying for terrible fuel economy standards or wildly unsafe pedestrian design of trucks etc etc etc.

I'd argue the only morally acceptable car brand is having no car at all and using sustainable public transport but that's just not on the cards for most people in the UK outside of big cities so you've got to pick your poison.

Got my Monta enabled charger installed, so much nicer having a dedicated point rather than a 3pin through the window!

Did have a mini heart attack based on the cost of my first charge using it though, I'd input the price per kwh as 12.xx rather than 0.12xx - first charge estimated cost of £100+

You've got plenty of years to wait until a peak, mid week charge costs that much ;)

The one I'm looking at is a 2022 Ultimate AWD with Tech pack it's a 73Wah battery but that is more than enough range for my use. It's with Hyundai approved used so warranty will not be an issue.

Just general stuff really like how's it to live with, reliability etc. I did read about the in car charger failing quite regularly on some but not sure if that is a big issue or not.

The 12v and ICCU issues put me off this car but at least you'll have the approved warranty.

So, first of all I've had no ICCU (charging unit) issues, but the car has had 2 x software updates for the ICCU during services. It also has had the 12V battery replaced as part of a tech bulletin/recall at the last service. I had a battery monitor for the 12v and never had an issue, but was done anyway. As yours is from Hyundai I expect all tech bulletins/recalls to have been completed. I had one issue for a few weeks over the winter, due to the HVAC acting strange where the temp or fan would ramp up by itself and couldn't be changed using the manual controls and had to be done through the screen. It seemed to sort itself out after I disconnected the 12v battery though and never had the issue since. I've averaged about 10.5k miles a year, tyres at 6mm, prob around 3mm a year so prob last 3 years or so, brakes etc still plenty of use left. Ride etc will be different as yours is the higher spec on bigger wheels, but never have an issue on long drives and the interior is very roomy and most materials feel good. No rear wiper takes a bit of getting used to, at worse I have a glass cleaner and cloth in the boot and give it a clean when its a bit dirty. Everything just works well, the regen is excellent, i normally use auto as that alters the amount of regen depending on road/traffic etc great for motor way use. One think to check is has it had the 3 year/30k service as that can be more expensive as it requires a full coolant flush and change of the jacket around the battery. I've probably mentioned more bad points than good, that's only as they are probably more useful to know, but these are very few and the car is great to drive, quick enough in normal/sport, comfy plenty of room, the UI is nice and fairly simple to use. As for range my use is 80% Motorway commute, but this is in traffic and rest in town, i have averaged 3.8m/kwh over the last 10.5k miles, DC charging is quick not perhaps as quick as you think but I find my car is waiting for me rather than me the car of i stop at a service station. Hope that helps a bit, but this is my experience, so would recommend having a drive etc.

premium red nice - don't see many in N. Cambs

So BMW will brand/sell a V2H charger with neue-klasse , nice rhombus screen and projected panoramic display w/small speedo (does that mean it works with polarized glasses)

I put a deposit down on one of these (Ultimate / Tech pack!) back in 2021 literally just as they landed..

I like the looks, interior, space it's all good!

The only reason I removed the deposit and got an ID.3 is simply the finance was terrible on it and since they are a little less efficient, the 73kwh battery was a bit stingy.. The ID.3 had 7K off and good finance packages.

However, as a secondhand proposition, some are now £18k-£20k, it's a lot of car for the money and ICCU issues (hopefully largely resolved via software) aside, I still rate them as being something good to look at and has all that extra interior space..

i had a couple of cold callers pop around today trying to get business to clean and then seal my driveway... and one made the mistake of asking me about my EV and range/running costs etc.

By the end of it i think they must have felt like the 2 women in the film heretic trying to get away :D

what did genuinely surprise me was that they had no idea that any EVs could manage a worst case scenario range of 200 miles (and i even admitted as far as range and efficiency goes there are plenty better than my car)....... and neither did they know how cheap it was to charge at home or that there were special off peak tariffs to get your electricity down to less than standard price..... all they knew was that public chargers were insanely expensive (true enough, no argument from me there).

Both of them were gobsmacked when i told them that my energy bill was less due to having 2 evs and a house battery than it was without even after charging 2 EVs thanks to intelligent octopus and 7p kwh energy.

I must say that particular specimen of M3 is pretty refined even compared to my F36 440i.
Instant torque is really something else!
Also all 4 Michelin pilot sport 4 tyres are basically brand new with 6mm+ on them, so that's one less consumable expense not required in the near future.
Bodywork is also nearly pristine and only 1 ding on the NSF door, I'm guessing from parking shenanigans.
One pedal driving is pretty impressive. I averaged 247Wh/mile on the 7 mile road test too.

Now just need to sell my beloved 440i... /Sadface

On the bright side, the car basically has all the options ticked and also has much cheaper running costs with most of the depreciation already done for...so this should be a relatively nice keep for the next few years.

It goes to show how much people lap up the FUD spread by the mainstream media, takes 2 minutes on Google to find all of that out, but when most of the major news outlets and motoring press are constantly putting out opinion pieces about bad EV experiences and reporting on "EV" fires (that later turn out to not be), I guess it's not surprising that they just write them off out of hand :(
