Star Trek : Starfleet Academy (Paramount+)

I struggled with early DS9 due to how rubbish an actor Avery Brooks(Sisko) was. I dipped in here and there as the series went on and he did get better from what I remember as they seemed to change him in to a bit of a hard man, but I never got back in to to to properly see the arc people always go on about. It was competing with B5 at the time for me, which was vastly superior. I will rewatch DS9 at some point though.

As I say, a rubbish actor on Star Trek.

"Avery Brooks' acting in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is a point of contention among fans, with some finding his performance wooden or overly dramatic, while others appreciate his unique intensity and the depth he brought to the character of Commander Sisko."

Sums it up I feel.

yeah i agree - it was like he was on a stage being overly dramatic.

DS9 is the best. They didn't even have lightsabers and saved the galaxy.

But they did have a lead character (Sisko) that committed multiple war crimes.

"For the uniform" - Poisoned an entire planet's atmosphere to drive out an individual as he saw Edlington's defection to the Marquis as a personal attack

"In the pale moonlight" - Instigated a conspiracy to bring a foreign power into the Dominion war. The conspiracy included the assassination of a foreign government representative. Whilst he was unaware of the assassination part until it was too late, he was still part of it.

That's why sidko turned out so awesome lol.
When it's the fate of the alpha quadrant at stake .......

Ds9 had a crappy start but damn it turned out awesome, the B5 clone on par with s1-4 :p

Avery Brookes certainly did the slow stuttering shouting monologue well.....

And ofc

It's complicated. That's a good thing.

Sometimes in scenes it felt like he was carting a soapbox around with him just to burst out little dramatic speeches. Its just the way he delivered the lines, his inflections etc that seemed way over the top. For me, he was the more "meh" part of the show, I enjoyed it a lot more when characters like Odo, Quark, Garak, Dukat, O'Brian were getting a lot of the screen time.

Read comments. As expected this sounds like trash.

Going through TNG at the moment. Some truly awesome episodes at times. Makes me sad they don't make Star Trek like this anymore.

I can understand the point, in the early seasons the character wasn't landing well at all. It's only as the Dominion aspect grew that the character, the story and the actor aligned. He's absolutely knocking it out of the ground by the later seasons but the first few seasons separating bad acting from bad characterisation is more difficult.

@PlacidCasual

I just don't see it. Yeah, Brooks very much plays Sisko in a more theatrical style. Because that's the character. S1 of DS9 has some absolute bravura performances from Brooks right from the off in "Emissary".

It's also the 2370s in-universe, not the 1990s. Go back the same time difference in The Real World™, and see how different the way people are talking is! It's part of why I think nuTrek will age way worse than classic Trek - everyone's talking in a painfully 'current' way, all cynical quipping and minimal gravitas. That works in something like Lower Decks (and even that show knew when to tone it down), but I'm not sure the same can be said for DIS or SNW.

It's been a decade since I last watched a full DS9 watch through and I rented them as they were released on VHS from the video shop at original release. I think Avery Brooks is a great actor I can't remember to an episode level so I'll happily concede if there are individual episodes where he performs well in the early seasons. But my historic memory lines up with Bubo's point the character was flat early on and I don't remember being impressed with Brooks. Later on however is a different matter entirely.

I currently watching ds9 after giving up on it years ago after just 2 seasons. I agree brooks acting was pretty bad and Jake plus a few others weren't great to start with but it does get better as the seasons go on. I'm on episode 103atm so still 70ish to go and I'm enjoying it and feel some of the episodes and characters are as good as/better than the other series.

For me nearly all Trek series start out awful in the acting department. Characters and their interactions with others take time to mature and until then they feel very "readey from scriptey."
