At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

This came up in discussion in a WhatsApp group I’m in… there’s graphics cards that cost well over £2k, meanwhile there’s over 16,000 second hand cars for under £2k on auto trader. We’re through the looking glass at this point.

I spent nearly £600 on my 9070 XT when it was on sale last month and that was pretty eye watering. The idea of spending £2k on a card is absolute madness.

I did need a new electric heater for my bedroom, at least my 5090 saved me some money on that.:D

Well i just caved in and bought a RX9070 XT Gaming OC. BF6 was getting 29fps on my RTX3070........ Still might get some outlay back by selling the 3070

You did well to hang on to your 3070 that long.

I got shot of mine a few years ago now, I thought it was a pretty disappointing card.

The 3070 went down pretty well at release as it was £469 for a card that was as fast as the previous gen flagship, these days we don’t get that for £1000 let alone £500, imagine the disappointment of 5070 owners in 5 years time.

Yes but for a reasonably short space of time only, then the mining boom hit and they were north of £800, and the rest usually.

I got mine mid 2021 for £600 from ocuk on a special deal, which was, at the time and absolutely steal.

It was a case of beggars can't be choosers I had never really intended to get a 3070.

I thought it was pretty awful though, 8gb in 2020/2021 was short of Nvidia intentionally giving it a short shelf life in the hope to upsell you again.

That didn't work out though, for me anyway as it'll be a long time until I ever buy anything Nvidia again.

Until the 6XXX series comes out then:

Mining did screw over that generation but even today a 1k 5080 is net worse in performance relative to the previous gen than a 1k 3070 was and that's without mining.

Yeah £20 lol
£20 per year then the cost of selling your old card an the cost of the new one etc... i use geforce now, i cancel the sub for a few months then restart it. Plus I can use it anywhere in the world on almost any pc, no need to DL the game you cant beat that. Plus the cards are just getting too expensive. give it a few years and mid range cards will be 1k.

I used to be mad for buying cards, but I've just lost the will to live when it comes to GPU prices, I'm happy enough now with a mobile APU as the games I play just aren't that gpu intensive anymore.

@TNA you predicted I'd be getting a 5090 no matter what, still no 5090, what happened :p

Haha. I thought based on your reasoning of using your 4090 for "business reasons" and how invaluable the boost you got from going from your 3080 Ti, that you would sell your 4090, add a few hundred quid and upgrade.

Thought you might do it just for the vram alone

None of the apps I use for business utilise more than 21GB VRAM, unused RAM is wasted RAM!
