Octopus Power Ups and Free Energy Sessions

Free electric session tomorrow 2pm to 3pm, don't think I'll bother unless the skies are cloudy.

Exactly this. They did not even give me a boost session which made the whole thing pointless.

Might give it one more go and see.

As the solar forecast is not great, and I'm at home, I'm going to give the free session a go.

  1. Batteries set to discharge down to 50% by 2pm
  2. Dishwater needs to go on (hour long program)
  3. Turned the hot water down, will turn it back up at 2pm (ASHP)
  4. Will set the batteries to pull some from the grid as well.
  5. May even plug the granny charger in if I can be bothered - car doesn't really need a charge.
This will also give me chance to get the thermal camera on the batteries and electrics and make sure there are no hot spots under heavy load.

All that effort for 50p :p

Funnily enough I was just thinking that.

Be useful to check the batteries and DC connections when charging with a lot of power though.

Only real effort required is number 5, the rest is just a few settings on phone app and PC. It's also a useful reminder of how I need to set things if we get any sessions in the winter.

Better than last time, managed to pull in a whole 5.7 kWh, worth 85p exporting it later

This time of year its really not worth the effort.

My car charged this time, plus washing machine and drier pulled around 6kwh. Much better than last time.

I think Im going to actually end up down on last week's one. The car was plugged in but even though the car did charge for 5 minutes or so the whole period is showing as peak rate. The same happened in the evening when the car started charging at 11pm too.

Unless I eventually get credited about £1.50 for the free hour it'll be a loss. No way am I doing it again.

The usage always shows the peak rate cost - it’s credited at some point later rather than instantaneously.

50% off electricity for your EV and home between 23:30-5:30 tonight.

Yup, that's right: we'll give you 50% off your already super-cheap off-peak rate tonight, as long as you...

Plug your EV in this evening (Sunday 10th Aug) AND
Don't plug in your EV tomorrow evening (Monday 11th Aug)

Covers any scheduled charging outside of the off peak hours this evening as well.

Having literally only just got our EV charger installed last week as don’t always fully understand.

What does it mean “evening” and how long for? E.g i can plug it in from 18:00 to 19:00 and I’ll be eligible? Or do they actually mean leaving it plugged in all evening and night, basically?

Usually it means plug in today with a ready time tomorrow morning and a smart charge session has to be completed.

If you stop it early, I doubt you’ll get the reward.

This is one I will be participating in!!

I thought the email was pretty clear.

You have to be on IOG, plug in tonight, let it complete a scheduled charge overnight, you'll be charged 3.5p per kWh for car charging and any house use between 23:30 and 05:30, if the car is scheduled to charge outside those hours, then that and house use will be half price (3.5p) as well, so long as the car charges.

DO NOT plug the car in tomorrow, after unplugging it in the morning.

Shame my car only needs about 20 kWh, but at least the house battery will charge at half price.

Perfect timing for us, we've been away for the weekend so the wife's 64kw car will be basically empty by the time we get back tonight.

Usually it updates within a couple of days to show the cheap slots, but hasn't this time.

The half price charging is perfect timing for me too as I was going to charge tonight.

That’s clearer now. So nothing to do with the evening then.

Only that you have to plug in this evening to qualify, I shall plug in around 22:30. To me this evening is any time after 18:00 to midnight, suppose it depends on your interpretation of "this evening" though.

I just don't like the way they say "evening" - it's a really vague statement.

If they said "plug it any time from midday 10th and don't boost", that would be clearer for me.

I imagine that plugging it in at any point today will be OK so long as you leave it on automatic, but I think it's a bit daft using terms like "evening" when they're not specifically defined.
