What "man jobs" have you done today?

Been getting into some DIY and woodwork lately.
Bought a Bosch drill, and today I used it to bore a hole in a tree trunk to make a post to lock my bike to.

Pretty sure that’s one of those expensive angle grinder resistant locks isn’t it?

But then you have locked it to a wooden post that could be cut with a £2 hand saw in seconds without making much noise.

It’s probably enough for insurance mind but I’m not sure that’s the point!

No but they carry an angle grinder that will happily cut though wood with ease and/or come back with a saw and take it later.
Edit: the only thing going for the trunk is its thickness - it’s probably thicker than the typical grinder blade so multiple cuts are needed.

Yesterday I cleared a 1200mm x 2400mm area of "waste"* ground next to a fence, which involved digging out and bagging up probably 0.5 tonnes of soil, then flattened and stabilised (i.e. thoroughly mixed in some cement) the soil underneath and compressed then a quick sprinkle of water.

Going to go pick up some sand and slabs later on, then the weekend's job is to put down the slabs and then build an Asgard bike store on top.

Then, when the bikes are finally out of our brick shed, I can repoint the inside, paint it, and start building my workshop :D

Replaced the Reolink PTZ camera I bought during Prime Week, which died after the recent heavy rains (POE connection weather seal failed, corroding the pins).

Reolink after-sales were excellent, offering an immediate replacement which was mounted this afternoon, with the ethernet connections wrapped in plenty of self-amalgamalgmatatating tape and tucked away neatly in a weatherproof junction box (lesson learned).

It's not the most discrete device, but it's high up enough to go unnoticed by most.

Having it easily viewable helps as a deterrent surely? I'd rather people seen it and chose not to damage my car than have a damaged car and a recording of them doing it

This.

Visible CCTV is a deterrent against opportunistic crime. Anyone coming equipped will have countermeasures (aka face covering).

It's a 6 + 2 three's situation - the ones actually picking houses/cars to break into know what to look for (the infrared lights make them pretty obvious at night).

We've avoided any issues in the almost 4 years we've been here, likely because we have the cameras and Poppy, our highly trained attack-Cockapoo, who's a very effective noise-maker.

I didn't want to make them too obvious because Portsmouth has a room-temperature IQ element that once attacked a Paediatrician"s house, because they can't spell and assumed the first four letters meant something else involving kids...

New camera is already proving a better entertainment investment than any Sky subscription:

Stolen Golf was being raced up and down the street all evening (70+mph, in a 20 zone). Police attended (unusually) and caught the driver (no licence, insurance, etc).

He went in one vehicle, then the Golf left on the back of another. And relative peace resumed.

Among many things this weekend, admired my bucket of copper off-cuts. Some of these pieces were removed recently from around 1998 and there is a notable difference in thickness vs new stuff.

This now lives in the garage with all the pieces of wood and cable I will keep just in case but probably never use.

Friday evening, noticed a stain appearing on the downstairs toilet ceiling. So spent Friday evening working out what was going on.
Turns out, the waste from my bath travels slightly uphill before entering the internal soil pipe. The rubber boss had perished and the pipe had become loose.
Had to cut a few small holes for access, and it looked as though the bath was going to have to come out.
Fortunately, managed to squeeze my hand in to replace the rubber boss, and re-arranged the pipe under the bath to put less strain on the connection.

Painted the cleaned up side of the steel panel with 3 layers of bitumen paint. When it's dried off I'll turn it over to start cleaning the rust off that side.
