EV general discussion

Why of of interest? I could understand if it knocked your confidence in Jag EVs if they make it painful to sort but otherwise it's the same as an ICE car having an engine issue would that then put you off ICE cars?

Mostly an irrational view.

Heard back from dealer, modules need replacing, on back order, no ETA. Awesome :( there's some kind of good will being offered by JLR so they're looking into it and coming back to me.

Normally this does with most people, so why you've brought ev versus ice into the debate only you know.

Seems like a sensible comparison, it's not a EV vs ICE point it's a comparison of a similar thing going wrong in an ICE car where that's unlikely to then put someone off all ICE cars.

Now that I've got the Hypervolt installed and can make maximum use of the cheap rate, I thought I knock together a quick sheet to see some typical figures:

The benefits of charging at home on the cheap rate are plain to see.

It equates to approx 1.8p per mile at the cheap rate and 7.7p per mile at the standard rate.

Happy with that :).

Well in a ICE car I imagine it’s a much quicker fix.

I'd probably add +15% for transmission losses and that's a more accurate cost reflection

Indeed. There are a few other caveats too, such as the charging rate isn't instantly 7kWhs and can fluctuate as the battery charges, so equates to a longer charge time thus more cost.

It's good man-maths though ;).

Did a diy ceramic coating of my tesla and also got new wheel covers. For some reason the seller sent 2 seperate full sets!

Not hugely impressed with who I bought from (car360 due to marks on the car, delivered by smokers etc) but overall liking the red colour.

Got my first near 300 mile trip up the a1/m1 this week, reckon it's worth planning or let tesla app do its thing (I'd hope the chargers it suggests to me are at services?)

Edit:worked out it's actually 250 miles... Wonder if my ModelY long range could work it with my heavy right foot... I'll probably charge anyways.

Think I worked out our PHEV costs per mile at about 3.3p on the cheap rate, and 13p at the peak rate.

So even if we decide to charge up during the day if it's getting a lot of use, that's still cheaper than petrol which I worked out at roughly 20p per mile (based on 30mpg / 135ppl at the pump...although I have no idea what the MPG while just using the ICE engine is at the moment).

Not as efficient as full BEV but still pleased with that.

Just let the Nav do the work, the only thing you have to consider is the arrival state of charge you want and set that accordingly. (I have done this all the way to the middle of France).

It will route you via chargers and that will take into consideration how busy they are etc. Some might not be at services, but almost always have a toilet and somewhere to get food within a very short walk.

You should just about make it on one charge if you stick to posted speed limits and go easy with the accelerator.

Either way, plenty of chargers on the A1 up to Newcastle, it’s a bit sparse further north.

If you stop at a charger at say a hotel, check the parking requirements, you may need to register in reception.

Some chargers have paid parking (not unique to Tesla) when off motorway.

I'm sensible when I drive generally but on dual carriageways I tend to go 80+

I'll take a view wether to use the tesla network or the ones that are at say Wetherby. Does tesla let you pre plan via mobile?

Yes.

Be careful with speed as read speed is pretty much the same as GPS, unlike other cars there isn't a buffer built in.

Yes, although it may select a different route once the car nav gets hold of it and I think it will only plan Tesla chargers via the app.

Tesla will be about half the price of Gridserve.

Yeh my car is within less than 0.5mph with GPS speed.

What should I look out for on a used Hyundai to ensure that the original battery and warranty is still valid? I know it needs to have the service at correct intervals but anything else? Looking at around a 22 plate. I assume that if I go for a approved used then the 5 year offered by Hyundai on them will cover the battery as well?

If it’s a 22 plate just make sure there is documented proof of the 24 (2 year) service being done. If it’s from Hyundai it should be logged on their system and stamped in the service book. The battery is 8 years or 100,000 miles.

I looked at an ionic at Car360 but as they could not show proof of service and Hyundai had no record of it being done I walked away. I decided on approved Hyundai in the end to save the hassle.

I did exactly the same at the same place. Another place are saying they have one with a FSH so just wanted to check what was needed before I enquired. Thanks.

Hyundai can tell you about the service history, if you get the details of the car and call their customer service number.
