Which X870E motherboard?

Asrock Nova X870e here, I updated the bios before I added any parts to the motherboard, then simply fitted the Samsung 990, 7600x and 32gb of Corsair 6000 C30 DDR5.

I bought this specifically for the PCIe lane layout as I plan to run three or four NVMe drives.

No issues but to be honest it is currently just running as a Linux play thing and not seeing much use.

I have not seen much online regarding issues since the bios updates were released.

I managed to get the Asus ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming for about £350 the other week (which still feels like bonkers money for a motherboard!), so far it's been excellent. Loads of connectivity on the back and internally (lots of fan headers and three 5v RGB connectors), and I've had no issues with it so far. I wasn't sure about some aspects of the aesthetics at first but once installed it looks quite good; still not as slick as the NZXT N9 X870E, but the price difference became the deciding factor there.

The weird way the M.2 lanes are split up put me off at first, but the chances of me needing another gen 5 drive are slim.

I will be building my new rig shortly with the Asrock Phantom Nova X870E, I see the instructions that come with the board are minimal but the BIOS instruction manual is 85 pages.
Is there anything special i need to do or tricks etc or do i just boot this thing up? I see there is an "Auto Driver Installer" which says install windows then connect to the internet.
Thanks

You should update the bios to the latest as there have been fixes to solve any issues.

Be aware that on first boot on AM5 it can take up to 15mins for anything to show on screen and may reboot a few times this is because the motherboard is training the memory so be patient.

I will have to update the bios, checking the manual it doesn't clearly state which usb port to use, chatgpt isn't much help. Lots of statements like - "use the flashback port".
In the manual page 9 is it the port numbered 2 - USB3.2 Gen 1 Type- A ports USB32_34 or is it the port numbered 8 USB3.2 Gen 1 Type- A port USB32_8?
Thanks

It is the USB port immediately underneath the LAN port I believe (page 57).

By the way, this should not normally be necessary? Flashback is mainly intended for when you have an unsupported CPU.

I'll be using it to update the bios.
Yeah, I just mean, if everything is working fine (you're getting through to boot, OS, etc) you'd not normally use flashback. You CAN if you want to, but the level of feedback you get is usually much less than the internal BIOS tools (..like just a flashing light).

I'm also looking for a new motherboard at the moment. I'm currently returning an ASUS ProArt X870E-Creator WiFi after both ethernet ports simply didnt work at all. I had the same problem with their ITX B850 board as well, and it seems to be a known issue with ASUS boards, so I'll be avoiding them completely going forward.

I've never had any problems with Gigabyte boards in the past, so I'm considering the Aorus Master X870E. The ASRock option is tempting too since they've been excellent previously, though I'm a bit wary given the AMD 9000 series issues some people have reported with their boards.

Quite happy with my "Asus ProArt X870E-Creator".

Very solid build quality, No issues at all. Also you get a free 3 or 5 year warranty (cant remember which one) with it if you register on Asus.

I’m sending it back. A brand-new device shouldn’t fail its first-boot diagnostics and arrive with every Ethernet port dead. My USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter works fine, so the problem is the board itself. The Intel I226-V controllers have been nothing but trouble for me, and the Marvell 10 GbE controller isn’t detecting anything either.

What's the best X870-E in terms of lane sharing between M.2 and PCI-E lanes?

Looking £250-£400 range, not the silly end. Not ruled out the X870 either, there doesn't seem a a lot of difference but this platform will have to last 5-7 years.

I've looked at the ASROCK's - X870-E Taichi Lite, X-870 Riptide, X870-E Nova - but the CPU issues are worrying. Also Gigabyte X870-E AORUS Elite (decent price), and the MSI X870E MPG Carbon WIFI (absolute top of my price range), and also MAG X870 Tomahawk.

I've had several Aorus Elite boards, All from AM4,AM5, LGA1700 , LGA1851 and all have been rock solid and plenty of features for their price range.

I think the Asrock Nova is the pick of the litter overall but the eilte is definitely a solid option.

That said it seems to be the Asrocks that are having the CPU issue, although it does seem to be the 9800x3d that is fying, I'll be getting a 9700X at most. It does seem to be just a BIOS issue mind you.
