EV general discussion

Little & Large at the seaside. Just need to find some power now or we are staying here……

Today I learnt if you plug in your granny charger to a static caravan it works until you try and boil the kettle then all the trips blow and the Haven people tell you off… lol

We stayed at a lodge on the Isle of Wight this weekend and there was a specific warning in the instructions NOT to plug in an EV as it could knock out the power on the whole site…

In fairness, the power supplies to those lodges/park homes were never designed to have EVs hanging off them.

They probably only have a 32A supply for the whole unit as most of them usually have gas hobs and heating.

If they have a hot tub they will have a bigger supply but most of that capacity is taken up by said hot hub.

That said, they are going to have to do some upgrades somewhere over the next decades because they aren’t going to have the capacity to deal with large numbers of EVs and there is going to be an expectation that this kind of site will have capacity to charge the cars of all those who are staying (for a fee of course).

Not only that, the site should be looking at EV charging as a new revenue stream and profit centre.

Quite - chargers for every pitch would probably be unrealistic, but at the very least a couple of rows of bookable destination chargers are going to become pretty much mandatory, otherwise the places which don't provide them are very quickly going to find themselves losing business to the places which do

Return on investment is exactly why that won’t be happening any time soon!

Best ones are where podpoint turn up and install some dedicated posts in a main area.

Be careful.
When we arrived at Haven last month, I was informed that if i was caught charging from the caravan, we would be asked to leave the site.
They had 4 chargers at reception 22KW ones. which were set to 50pkwh
SO i used that twice. Once mid week and once to get to 100% before the drive home.

Annoyingly, there was a family with two massive range rovers. NOT EV's.
They keep parking in the EV charging spaces. cus they are morons.

Doesn't surprise me, and makes perfect sense - as @b0rn2sk8 says, the electrics will not be rated for that kind of load. Apart from the potential to take out half the site's electrics, there probably a fire risk there in case the breakers don't do their job properly!

I hope you complained every time you noticed

Yep they have 4 chargers here too I have found. The Haven guys were ok just said not to do it as the caravans electrics are a bit weak. Had a long chat about EV’s and ionic looks, tyre prices etc.

Will charge later only downside is the chargers are right outside the pool and entertainment with lots of kids on scooters and bikes zipping around. They are the use your own lead type 12kw from what I can gather.

AHH brilliant. Will give them a call tomorrow.
Gave this a try this morning. All they would confirm was that the car had a 5 year warranty if it has been serviced by Hyundai garages (which is not correct according to their own info) They said they couldn't tell me the service history or current warranty status because I didn't own the car.

Doesn't Haven/similar hold visitor car registrations so they could fine/tow people leaving cars in charging places - enforcers.

Try phoning your local Hyundai dealers and speak to the service department. They can check the service records on Hyundai system.

VW made me laugh when I did the same. Dropped them an email to check the service history and they opened the reply with "You're not the current owner showing on our system, to update this please visit your local dealer with all the ID you own to have this corrected...and the service history is attached" was fully expecting it to end with "then we can confirm service history".

MG request a copy of the V5 as well.

I actually just got an email back from the customer services (I emailed them last night too) saying that there is no record of the service on their system. According to the dealer the interim service was done by Hyundai so that should be registered. The last one they did themselves so that makes sense. It is all a bit of a minefield. I think I will wait for an approved one I want to become available....
