RTX 5080 PSU Requrements (will a 750w cut it?)

Personally wouldn't go lower than 850w. I'm on a 13900k with a 5080 on a 3 year old 850w seasonic and I'll for sure be getting a new PSU soon.

850w is the minimum recommended for a 5080. PSU's degrade with age, an older 750w is cutting it way too close.
 
What was the exact model of the PSU and what games was he playing at what res?

Was he capping frames? I do this via RTSS and it can substantially reduce energy requirements.

"Platinum" means very little, it simply relates to how efficiently the supply uses energy. You could technically have a bronze unit that was of a higher overall quality than platinum, although admittedly that's highly unlikely.
I'm well aware of the rating system, and no, he's a bit of a luddite who has no FPS caps etc, only G-Sync on. We monitored framerates, GPU usage, presentmon info etc via Afterburner and HWInfo while running GPU intensive games (it was to test the card itself).

I was dubious that it would cope but it did. I'm not saying this is a recommended setup, but the average power consumption (up to 350w but generally below) was within spec considering the rest of the system (it surely wouldn't stand a chance with an Intel CPU). That's not to say that spikes couldn't cause issues, it wasn't in the system for a prolonged period of weeks and beyond, but it handled what he threw at it for long gaming sessions at higher resolutions (1440p UW and 4K).

It's a EVGA P2 unit, not sure which revision specifically, but it's around 5 years old if not older. Again, not a recommendation, just my observation.
 
With future upgrades in mind would look to invest in a new quality 1000w (at least Gold) psu. Prices at moment are not great but every now and then good buys appear - Good luck!!
 
I'm using a 15+ year old OCZ 750W Bronze-rated PSU with a 5700X3D and 7900 XT. I've had no problems with it at all.

This PSU once ran 2x GTX 970s in SLI and an FX-8350 back in the day, so actually a similar overall load.
 
Don't waste your money, 750w is way more than enough. PC gaming is expensive enough already.

I was using a 10 year old no-name 550w on my 3080 for two years, zero problems. It started as an experiment but I just left it since it was causing zero issues.

Absolutely this. Your PSU is not bad, and is gold rated. Whilst certainly not the highest effieceny rating, it will handle your setup with a 5080.
 
It's fine. Undervolt the GPU to whack 50-100w off of it with zero performance loss. I think the most logical choice is to go for the 5070ti though as its only 10% slower than the 5080 /w the same vram amount for 250 quid less.

People gone crazy with these 1000w+ PSUs since we got the 400-600w power guzzlers like the 4090/5090/7900XTX, you don't need that for 300w GPUs. My current system uses around 300w at maximum load (5700X3D, 4070Ti super both undervolted).

Sorry for jumping on this, but I upgraded the GPU to a MSI 5090 Ventus x3, thought I had a 850w PSU turns out its a bronze Corsair TX750M.
It has been working fine undervolted to 850Mv not exceeding 450w (steel nomad) 300-250w in flight sim, but that's coupled with a 14700k, 16gb RAM and a few ssd's/m.2 drives, case fans etc.
I am now upgrading to an MSI MPG A1000GS to go alongside my MSI Z690 Pro A DDR4 Mobo just to be on the safe side with PCI 5.1 support direct for the GPU.

The answer here is however long the warranty is for whatever power supply you have is however long you can use it with whatever card you want to use it with.

This one has a 10 year warranty, so I'll replace it shortly before then. I'm 5 years in, so plenty of time left.

What if the power supply is well below that which is recommended? Should I carry on using the tx750m if it works?

If it works, it implies the PSU can handle the power characteristics of the card, or at least to some degree, but you'd expect higher temps and noise levels, which can shorten the PSU's lifespan.

Older PSUs can also be more prone to ripple, which can degrade your other parts.

If it's still in warranty, no reason not to. If it's not, be sensible and get another that has at least 7 years warranty, preferably 10. That way all your expensive gear will be covered too.

Edit: Although if WAY below recommended, probably time for a new one.

i run the rtx 4080 super undervolted 2700mhz 260watts with the 13700kf at 5.5ghz 1.3v 185watts. At full cpu and gpu load i pull just under 500watts from the psu and 545watts from the wall. however while gaming at 100% gpu load i get around 400watts from the psu and 440watts from the wall usually less depending on the game. if i leave my 4080 super at stock 280-320watts and cpu stock 200watts i get 600watts on the psu under full load and 500watts while gaming. all this is done using a hxi 1000w from back in 2017. so as longer as you have a decent 750 gold you will be ok. 850 would be better for future upgrades if you plan that.
