The Beatles

You don’t have to like them, but it’s pretty naive to not acknowledge the huge impact they had. Of course, the chances are if they hadn’t done what they did then someone else would have done, so there is definitely an element of the right people in the right place at the right time.

I'm sensible enough to realise that just because something sounds rubbish to my ears doesn't mean the artists are lacking obvious talent. They wouldn't have enjoyed the success they have if they were unskilled.

They just don't make music for me and that's fine. I think my issue is when fans of X proclaim that X is the greatest thing in the world and if you don't like them, you don't know music. And a lot of Beetle fans have that attitude

You mean like it's naive to not acknowledge the huge impact Chuck Berry and Little Richard had before The Beatles? Literal pioneers of Rock n Roll... Bit ironic that.

you can acknowledge that fact too. it's not a binary decision - you seem overly upset about folk praising the beatles, that wall of text from last night was a bit mentalist dude.

My post in no way said you couldn’t do that.

Besides which, I’m sure we could trace things back beyond Chuck Berry and Little Richard to people they were inspired by or who trod new ground before them. We’ve been making music for tens of thousands of years, since people were banging bones together and blowing into horns. Would you rather we said no one has done anything of note just because there was someone who came before them?

Nobody said that, back in 1956 my Dad was a massive fan of those American artists and to this day my favourite artist was his which is Buddy Holly.
I then spent decades playing in live bands doing those artists songs so a massive impact on me even though I didn't witness it.
It's like me saying they were overrated but when you had teenybop anthems like Young Love, Teenager In Love etc being played to you all the time on the radio, when the aforementioned artists burst on the scene it was orgasmic.
When the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show for the first time 78 million tuned in, nobody had seen a band like that before.
There were many bands but when The Beatles hit they were a full package that knocked everybody off their feet, nobody had heard songs like She's Loves You, All My Loving etc at that time, it really was new. Yes by todays standards they are pretty bland but there isn't a single artist in a major rock band that wouldn't put them near the top of the tree.
If you weren't there and didn't see the impact they had at the time then you have no clue how important they were.

I must admit I still love Revolver my all time favourite album. I also saw the Who at Trentham Gardens and at the Empire in Liverpool. Boy were they LOUD!!!!!. My ears took a day to recover.

I don't know if it was the same show but in 1973 at Trentham Gardens they tried to play Quadrophenia and it was a disaster.
They used backing tracks and some didn't play correctly and they played out of time with them etc.

I remember Quiver were the support band. They werent as loud there as they were at the Empire when Joe Walsh was in the support group with the James Gang

I know both of the Sutherland Brothers who had Quiver as their backing band, one of them dead now, and I used to use their studio which is still in their house/garage in Lightwood Stoke.
I can't remember who the support act was, never saw The James Gang.

I grew up listening to The Beatles but fell out of love with them for a time. When they started releasing remasters/remixes I started listening to them again. It's clear to me how much they shaped a lot of music popular today.

Sgt Pepper's is my favourite album.

I was a drummer in a previous life; when I started drumming I thought ringo was a very very average, now (that I understand drumming a lot better), I think he's a genius and definitely deserves his place in the best drummer's of all time list.
