Octopus Power Ups and Free Energy Sessions

(as just posted in ev thread) when you look at how much octopus get payed for the free energy

It just had to be plugged in. The issue is if you didn't get a slot in that hour, you were charged at peak rate but then only refunded at the cheap rate, so you're down about 20p for every kwh used.

Octopus clearly state that all electric above your normal use will be free, there is no requirement to plug in for this (I didn't), considering I'm normally exporting between 2pm and 3pm, my baseline is zero. I wonder what I'll get credited for the one on the 9th.

If this has affected a lot of people, there will be posts on the Octopus forum - I'll take a look later.

Just digging around on the Octopus forum, the car no longer needs to be plugged in.

I’ve just had it confirmed from the team working on this that the two components are indeed independent. So, you don’t need to plug in your car to make use of the extra household elec

I've had another random payment of 33p today, so that's the payment for the 3.57kWh of free electricity covered but no credit for being plugged in for the hour yet.

I've had two separate payments today, 29p and £1.63.

The £1.63 must be for the session last Saturday, the 29p a top up for the previous session, which means both are about right.

It's real value is less, every kWh I pulled in was worth 15p in export later. What went in the car via the granny charger saved about 14p.

If its decent sunny weather I won't be bothering. I haven't bothered with plugging the car in via the Zappi, due to not knowing when it's charging session would be, this complicating things too much.

Had a campaign reward credited to my account today only thing I can think of is the half price car charging offer a few weeks ago but the numbers don't add up

Update on this dropped them an email and they'd credited me for the charging I'd done in the standard off peak times but not for the scheduled sessions before that. They've now manually credited my account, so worth checking your figures.

I have no idea what Ive been credited for. I have payments from them of 63p, 33p and 40p. It appears the first two are for the free electricity in the hour and the third is the hour's charging credit.

Just in case anyone still has any interest, there's a free session tomorrow at 14:00 to 15:00.

As the weathers looking good I'll pass on it, too much of a faff.

Not taking part, too much messing about.

I still havent received my credit for the half price charging on that Sunday night a few weeks ago.

After reading up online and various forums, it’s sounds like I’ll at best likely end up saving 50p. Not worth the hassle even plugging in the car, frankly.

if your car is gonna need charging at some point anyway is doing it to help the grid out by using excess renewable energy not a good enough reason ?

that said , if you have solar and it will cost you more to do it than not I can understand not bothering I guess..... unless of course they pay us for not exporting.....

has anyone checked if they pay for negative use? ie you could argue if I normally export 1kw in that hour but instead I use 1kw then i could expect to be credited 2kwh . I doubt it works like that but it would make sense

I haven't either, and loads haven't on the Octopus forum, I've only seen one person that thinks they've received a credit for it.

I've had it, had to message them to get all of it though. They'd only credited the charge used in the off peak window initially not the scheduled charging outside of that.

Won't bother with the free electric today other than plugging the car in as it needs plugging in anyway. Think I made about 20p last time and there was physically nothing else I could have used energy wise in that hour

Sounds like they need to sort first whatever is causing them to mess up crediting and stop the faff of people have to contact them to get it. One wonders if people would ever get it otherwise.

Example. They’d sent me an Octopus Mini couple weeks back but it didn’t work (no Live in usage on App). I rang and was told no Mini hadn’t been added to my account. They literally sent me the thing AND I activated it perfectly, with it showing all the correct coloured light(s). So it’s manual intervention from a human. Doesn’t instil confidence.

I support what they’re doing but don’t over extend your systems if they’re not up to the task.

Another free session tomorrow, which I may take advantage of, as the weather looks poor here.

We need to remember all these intelligent tariffs are still in beta so we're just the guinea pigs
