Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [15th - 18th August 2025]

Didn't see the match. How was Wirtz? Was he linking play but not on the end of stuff, or was he not great?

I had it on but was 50% on my phone sort of watching.

My half educated take was Liverpool need to find balance quickly if they're to be the red hot favourites for the title.

To be so open at the back I'd have expected to have seen more up front against a newly put together back line, despite the 4 goals.

But at the end of the day 4 goals is 4 goals, and a win while they warm up isn't a bad start.

Edit: Wirtz looked decent TBF some clever passes. But if he plays the advanced 10 they look exposed at the moment.

Honestly the ableist jokes aren't it either folks, walking a similar line
I apologise, I've got an Al Murray/Micky Flanagan/Jimmy Carr/Ricky Gervais sort of sense of humour, I thought it was funny as it was in jest rather than in malice, but nevertheless I apologise if my joke caused offence.

I was at the match last night and the atmosphere at the end was up there with anything I can remember. A combination of the lat minute goal, Chiesa & his song being so good and remembering Jota combined just resulted in an explosion of emotion.

Regarding the match, you can see we're not close to being fully ready for the season yet. It's not simply fitness but the personnel changes and tweaks to the system are going to take time and we're just going to have to find ways to win games while things are bedding in. As I speculated the other week, the system was a bit 4-4-2 diamond/4-2-3-1 hybrid with at varying points Salah playing alongside Ekitike and Gakpo becoming a 3rd midfielder - it probably explains our lack of interest in a direct Diaz replacement and why we're going for Isak alongside Ekitike.

Ekitike looks really good. When you look at him he looks a bit lightweight but his strength and hold-up & link play was outstanding and we really missed him when he came off. Szoboszlai in a deeper midfield position was a bit concerning - he's too careless in possession and that's something he's going to have to change if he's going to play there more this season. Hopefully we never see the Endo RB experiment again - there were other issues but as soon as he came on at RB he looked all at sea and the momentum in the game changed massively. And finally after 7 years of not wanting to kill our LB, it's taken me less than one game to hate Kerkez. This guy has serious Moreno, Enrique, Riise vibes.

Oh and Michael Oliver on VAR clearly didn't send the Bournemouth lad off because of our persuit of Isak, am I right @adam cool dude?

I think they have no choice but to give a lifetime ban.
They'll have to carry out an investigation and find proof of what he said (because he'll no doubt deny it) before they'll be able to ban him. Thankfully there appears to be witnesses that can back up the accusations against him. A disabled fan I follow on twitter has tweeted that he not only racially abused him but threw his chewing gum at him too. He said the guy has form for being a bit of a ****, throwing his chewing gum at a lino last season too.

I think with Grav back in the team, the midfield balance will be restored. I wouldnt worry too much about Kerkez, I reckon he was just a bit worked up as he was playing against his old mates. Anfield was electric all night.

On the racism topic, we are deluding ourselves thinking its left the game. Its crept back in, more so since brexit, but what makes me proud, is that people will call the muppets out, decent people dont stand for it, but the street level abuse is back to the bad old times when i were a lad in the 80's.

That fan is the epitome of stupidity. Stupid for being a racist idiot and secondly, demonstrating you're a racist idiot when you're front row in a highly televised game and there's 10s of thousands of phones around.

Howe complaining about the most obvious yellow of all time being given to Joelinton. Presumably it wasn't the challenge he was complaining about but the fact the ref didn't get the memo that you're not allowed to book Joelinton until he's made 17 fouls.
