EV general discussion

which is what they describe for cla awd - with the 2-speed gearbox though, can you engage the front motor at high speed on autobahn
(front:rear ratio must be way wider vs a tesla)

Eco mode isn't RWD only, it mostly uses RWD but if you put your foot down it also engages the front motor, but generally cruising about uses the 1 motor only.
That’s not at all the point. The 5N has some drift mode so for it to be rear biased it has to lower the front output.

You don’t have a dewalt drill in each hand then cause you don’t use one the other suddenly gets more powerful…

not at all. 2 sp irrelevant Completely different scenario.

Taycan has had 2sp rear since launch btw

I think as only the RWD motors have the 2 ratio gearing that engages at around 60+mph, its probably just for cruise. I think if you put your foot down to accelerate hard over the 60 mph it will prob step down the gearbox and run on both motors until you stop accelerating. The ratios i think is something like 11:1 normally then 5:1 on motorway cruise.

You are absolutely bloody obsessed with this CLA lark. Give it a rest
That or the R5. This guy grew up in the Uk too so the ‘second language’ thing the mods use as some justification for his poor posts with zero literacy or grammar checks is absolute rubbish

Over a month ago the EV grant was announced with savings of £1500 or £3750 on new electric cars up to £37k with savings available 'within days'.

Fast forward a month and we have just 22 models (over half of which are from Stellantis) None of which are in the £3750 banding.

For something that was meant to encourage people to pull the trigger on an EV and has instead left people waiting for the grant to appear... is it safe to say that this initiative has fallen way short of expectations? Dealers must be despairing, take something that is hard to get people to commit to and then dangle a carrot that turns out to be, at best less than half a carrot.

FRom the outset it was clear that Chinese EVs would be excluded so the only people willing to still splash the cash in that time would have been those considering a Chinese brand. An own goal just to add insult to injury.

Unless my assessment of the situation is inaccurate (please let me know if it is) how come the industry isn't fuming at a incentive that has become a disincentive for over a month?!

ok maybe you didn't understand the significance of extending the rwd discussion,
if you are running a rear motor in high gear at 8krpm , do you think the front one would run at 16K , or are the awd capabilities limited ast higher speeds ?
(yes of course taycan has 2 speeds - discussed 10's of time in this thread alone)

2nd generation 800V practical estatesuv car from european manufacturer with non minimalist interior - ev's are becoming more interesting ;
if (per my comment) you had a choice between an ioniq 5 and polestar 4 company car and that.

I don't think your assessment is at all inaccurate. Personally I don't think government should be subsidising the purchase of new cars at this point. It's a blunt tool and not one where you can easily measure incremental sales. I think some sort of scrappage deal would have been better but target at used cars. If you get the demand higher for used cars then the lease co's will be more confident in fleeting more EVs. As it stands it appears that the gov have over complicated this and the sector is waiting patiently, keen not to appear churlish about this hand out.

I would have put the money into infrastructure and trying to get the cost of public charging reduced. I'd also start taxing petrol and diesel more (puts on tin hat). They should also remove the luxury car tax VED thing on EVs. It is a bit of nightmare for dealers, especially as we approach September when the sales targets are high.

The motors can run at different speeds yes. What’s the point you making sorry ?

Right so update on the car situation, my E350 has been sold to a dealer who gave me a reasonable offer for it - they're coming to collect on Wednesday. And my BYD Seal is being delivered on Thursday.

So naturally, I've spent most of Saturday watching videos of Range Rover Sports and Range Rover Vogues, trawling through autotrader, and trying to work out if I should make the objectively terrible decision to cancel the BYD and buy an old L405 or L322 with ~50k miles on it and set aside a few thousand for repair costs and inevitable reliability issues.

I've decided not to be stupid, but it was oh so very tempting. I just can't justify setting aside £3k/yr just for repairs and servicing, on top of a few thousand that will inevitably be needed to deal with the expected issues e.g. timing belt, on top of dropping £15k-17k on a 10+ year old car with few modern amenities.

3 years of BYD and chill it is, and then maybe we'll see in late 2028...Maybe there'll be a few years used EV RRS or FFRR by then. Or maybe I'll have become rich and can afford one.

Free advertising.

My local Hyundai dealership has a huge banner advertising "up to £3,750 off EVs". The advert doesn't specifically mention the government grant. But it implies it. No Hyundai cars have been announced as being eligible for the grant, and there's a good chance that none will be.

Now, I haven't been in. But I'm willing to bet that said "up to £3,750 off" is just the same discounts they've been offering all year. And I'm also willing to bet that if I mentioned the grant, I would get spiel about how Hyundai are offering grant-matching discounts now, so that customers don't have to wait.

And then there's the other angle - how much of this £1,500-£3,750 is going to be a real saving for customers? And how much is going to be lost to improved manufacturer & dealership margins through the reduction of other discounts?

It just seems a total mess, be interesting to see if ANY cars at all actaully get the full 3750 as i thought everyone was pretty sure the Renault 5 would have been eligible being so locally sourced within Europe but obviously not..

Still think the whole thing is totally misguided, spend the lot of PROPER charging infrastructure and sort out the absolute mess public charging is at the moment.

All this 'discount' will do is line the pockets of dealers I'm sure.

New BYD Seal or 10 year old Range Rover... I mean, they both have 4 wheels I guess :p

The real trouble is not having the >£100k, and lack of sense, to buy a new range rover lol.

Fingers crossed they release an EV this year that depreciates massively from new.

Welcome to the pod ;).

I thought I was bad looking at older model, higher mileage Taycans and E-tron GTs when I was looking at options. Remember RR stands for Really Ruinous!
