EV general discussion

Welcome to the pod ;).

I thought I was bad looking at older model, higher mileage Taycans and E-tron GTs when I was looking at options. Remember RR stands for Really Ruinous!

After the last 48 hours, I now know more than I ever thought possible about L322 and L405s, timing chains, plastic vs aluminium intercooler pipes, DPF, crankshafts and oil dilution. And this is as someone that's only opened the bonnet of the cars in my life to top up some coolant!

The E Class Coupe was the only car I really wanted and obsessed over before I bought one, and I suspect the RR will be the same. I think I'll just start saving a pot over the next 3 years to justify it lol. Sorry BYD, but you're just the 2nd choice girl.

Anyone got any experience with Tesla Warranty?

My drivers seat creaks a lot. When I shift my weight, on acceleration and breaking.

Very annoying

I've made a service request, but they have put an estimate of £200 to adjust trim.
I very much doubt a small adjustment is going to fix this. Might need a whole new seat.

Will the Warranty cover it? Or will they try to blag wear and tear?

I know exactly how you feel. My Esprit is my true car but doesn't get enough time on the road. Being an old Lotus there isn't a nut or bolt I haven't touched!

As much as I like the Seal and it's EV performance it lacks the drama and sense of occasion (and the stink and dirt!) of a dinosaur fuelled sports car. They always will, regardless of how much fakery they add.

Free advertising.

My local Hyundai dealership has a huge banner advertising "up to £3,750 off EVs". The advert doesn't specifically mention the government grant. But it implies it.
I noticed that the other day, a few people elsewhere had mentioned Hyundai offering the grant, but when you actually check the website it says "Eligible for £3,750 Hyundai Electric Grant".

If you are buying from new then choosing HP/PCP/cash over PCH is going to be a loser anyway so the grant only benefits you if you are daft enough throw that money down the toilet in the first place for a huge proportion of offers. I'd love to know the actual stats for people who pay of a GFV and keep a car, or buy on HP and keep it for 10+ years, can't be many these days.

The £200 is usually the diagnostic fee and is normally waived if it’s covered under warranty. If you ask the question, they will confirm that to be the case.

It’s a pretty common issue in the Model Y and is usually covered by warranty - annoyingly mines just started creaking also.

I’d recommend joining the official Tesla uk owners group and if you search there, you’ll find the answers to all the common questions on there. There is a paid option but it’s very much optional.

I did, I can’t get my head around personal contract hire to be fair. Spend a fortune and then give it a back - rinse and repeat. Each to their own but it’s madness in my eyes.

So what did you buy, how much was it and how long have you had it, and when do you plan on getting shot of it? The key question, you bought it brand new, not pre-reg, 1 month old, etc. as this is about the grant effect on new cars.

I've had a lot of work done under warranty with Tesla. Normally pretty good although they came to the house on the last visit to sort out the charge port not opening (2nd time) and when they left one of the boot lights was left unplugged and the trim piece is loose.
Next appointment in a few weeks down at manchester. They've generally been better than other cars for warranty but i've never had quite so many issues as i've had with this car.

Especially with EVs the money to be saved even just going 12 months old and barely used is mad.

yeah this
no reason to buy a new EV, let someone eat the depreciation cost

for example, my 2022 model 3 LR AWD i just paid tesla £20k, and comes with an extra 1 year of tesla warranty
new in 2022 = £51k less 3k 2022 EV grant + £2k red paint + £3.4k enhanced autopilot + £1.5k acceleration boost = £55k

63% depreciation in 3 years is crazy!

My i4 could be seen as even worse, £72k new just £43k a few months later. There is just no point in buying new.

Yeah my ID3 14k miles just under 3 years old pretty similar percentage drop. I think list price was a touch over £40k cost me £17k.

Managers i4 again was very similar to @cuke2u absolute bargain compared to brand new

With my IPace playing up a bit, I've been thinking of what would I want to change it to if I decide to move it on once fixed.

It's owned outright by my Ltd Co so I was wondering whether to go down the pcp route or business contract hire. I believe VW finance allowed a company to have pcp. I'm not vat registered.

I've asked accountant for advice but just wondered if anyone knew of any reason not to do one or the other.

Good job there are all these car finance charities out there to prime the used market ;)

Indeed!

Enyaq iV Coupe 210kW 85x Sportline 82kWh 4x4 5dr Auto 10k miles PA - £451 x36 = £16,236 on a PCH (no upfront just 36 equal payments)

Crazy PCP deal same car via Skoda dealer - £451 first payment, then £885.46 x35 = £31,432 - that includes £3,750 dealer contribution (car grant equivalent) and you are on the hook for VED inc. 'luxury supplement' - even adjusting the deposit to £10k upfront and it's still miles more expensive.

Would anyone genuinely pay the latter to rent a £42k car for 3 years though?!

Then again, what do I know. I haven't bought a car in the last 12 years and have spent a whopping £12k on cars in my life :p

It's not renting on PCP though you have the option to pay off the GFV, the problem is people get on the PCP merry go round and chop it in at the end thinking they are 'saving' a deposit etc. Don't get me wrong you can find a OK PCP deal here and there, but due to higher base rate interest from the BoE it's much less likely.

Also that model is over £50k list with those options.
