EV general discussion

The only good thing about PCP is knowing all the figures up front, including the future value of the car so in that respect the dealership is taking the risk on the market.

Paying the large interest rates on the whole value of the car except the deposit is horrific though.

Just posted in the bimmer thread...but yeah, probably applies here too lol

My 440i GC bought in Jan 2021 for £23k and bought the MPPSK for it for £1.5k
Selling it on tomorrow after I collect the Telsa for £20k
So, £4.5k for 4.75 years = £80/month depreciation...what a deal lol

I wonder what my Model 3's depreciation would be like

£10k easy, but you'll have saved £4-6k in fuel.
Yes, that's the trade-off.
Looking forward to paying 2p/mile vs 28p/mile I currently pay, and also cheaper insurance on the Model 3 too...£800 vs £1100.
Also cheaper maintenance and tyres on the Model 3 too.

Nice insurance saving. What is the tyre cost difference?

I suppose the other question you could have asked is if you kept your 440i GC another 4.75 years what would it be worth?

So what did you buy, how much was it and how long have you had it, and when do you plan on getting shot of it? The key question, you bought it brand new, not pre-reg, 1 month old, etc. as this is about the grant effect on new cars.

That’s fair I forgot the context… I bought it 1 year old for £18.5k total cost of ownership. That was 7 years ago, still worth double the final payment which was 3 years ago!

Just had a look at AT, 2019 Model 3LR AWDs (with sub-70k miles) still going for £13-14k at the lowest end...
Hopefully that means that the depreciation curve of a 3 year old Model 3 should match my 7 year old 440i GC there or thereabouts...making the jump to an EV more financially sensible

My ICE cupra lease is up next month, and i've got my eyes on a used 2022 tesla M3 or MY......not sure if i need the long range versions as maybe only do any long range trips (200miles plus) twice a year.

Anyone got any pointers on what to look for on a used tesla? I think my main requirements would be, it would still need warranty so a 2022 car minimum and max 40k mileage...which would give me a year for any warranty issues.
Also Ryzen processor, and heat pump for M3....does Model y come standard with them? Gonna book some test drives as there is self server tesla 1hr test drives available locally...so will give me a feel whether i need M3 or MY

Anyone else seriously considering going electric?

Most people in this thread drive electric cars these days and there are quite a few of us who have done so for many years and only have electric cars now.

The 2022 Model 3 standard range gets just under over 200 miles range in winter and a bit more in summer. The point you haven’t listed is that they starting being delivered with a 60kwh battery from December 2021 these last few 71 plate cars had intel though and they switched to Ryzen on a 22 plate (I think). Prior to this date it had a 55kwh battery.

Model Y launched on a 22 plate and has all the things you mentioned but has slightly less range.

Test drives will tell you more but no doubt once you've been in the AWD model, it will be the one you end up getting. For the model y, I think the suspension was updated in 2023 so probably the model you want to aim for

Generally true, however this was the height of the chip shortages so some 22 plates were randomly delivered with intel atom chips. If getting a 22 plates then I would double check with the seller. You should be fine on a 72 plate to assume that these all came with Ryzen chips.
Looking at YouTube clips of the performance difference, I would not settle for an atom chip. The ryzens are a massive leap forward in performance

Interestingly I seen a thread on Reddit the other day that claimed If you're on IOG any general household electric used during your cars scheduled slots outside of the overnight off peak block is still charged at normal peak rate whether your car is charging or not.

They had this confirmed by Octopus CS, I'd received my first full months bill after being on IOG that morning so went to have a look and there's zero chance they're charging me peak price for household usage while the car is charging based on my bill so I fired off an email to ask the same question and again they came back and confirmed household usage should always be peak rate if not in the overnight cheap block.

The section from the T&Cs is pretty ambiguous depending on how you want it to apply so if it went to court they would almost certainly side with the customers as the ones who didn't write them.

Seems to be some very mixed messaging going on.

The self serve test drives only have the M3 highland and the MY. You won't be able to compare the 2022 M3.
The MY is also larger in all dimensions and has the hatchback boot, whereas the M3 has a saloon boot.
The internal acoustics of the MY is also apparently inferior to the M3 (I don't have first hand experience to compare). Apparently this is due to the buffeting effect due to the interior design: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/model-y-buffeting.194236/

Is there a way to check if the car has ryzen? i.e via the infotainment screen?

If you are on the ‘normal’ IOG tariff any half hour slot where your car is charging all your energy is 7p. this is based on your smart meter data which is in half hour slots.

If you are on the ‘flat rate’ £30/month version, your household usage is peak rate. This is based off the data your charger or car reports on its energy usage.

That was my understanding and what my bill reflects but it's not what Octopus are telling people.
