£3-3.5K 5090 Advice Needed

It's a good case, and if it ain't broke don't fix it, unless you want a change for aesthetics or the GPU flat out wont fit.

Yes, that and the Phantek cases held many a build in this forum. But, the Fractal had the edge on build quality, cooling and outputs.

@Gray2233 makes valid point. If you don't have a need for the new outputs at the top of the case (convenience) then this option would save you a lot of bother with regard to your desk/amputation (after a very thorough clean out).

still tempted to get this bad boy aswell

My basket at OcUK:

That said, it's your build and as you have the funds you should buy what makes you feel good. You upgrade rarely so £140 over 6 years is not a lot when considering your overall budget and concessions.

I always buy a case with the intention of using it twice - and did back in the day (but quality cases didn't change much back then. Silverstone anyone?). Now, invariably, i end up upgrading to the nth degree and when i do full upgrade i pass on my case/internals to friends/family and enjoy the experience of building in a new quality, and usually more spacious and better designed case. But, I like black boxes with sound proofing so they're usually be-quiet's uninspiring designs - but still enjoyable for me.

For example, my daughter's computer is front and center in her, highly stylised room (teenager) - sat on a wooden plinth under her desk. I was going to pass on one of my be-quiet black boxes - she didn't object but i could tell she wasn't impressed. I hinted she could look for another case and she jumped at it. I gave her a £100 budget but, kids being kids, she found the Design North. Had it not been a Fractal i would have told her to keep on looking - but after reading reviews and looking at images I could tell it would compliment her room and arguably become a feature.

TL;DR - if the case becomes more than black box and makes your room feel more comfortable then £140 is a small price for a ~6+ year piece of furniture - which could be used again with a future build as it's a timeless design; for a box. From your original post you seem to have the surplus funds, so you should definitely buy some elements that make you feel good, even if hard to justify logically. We lose sight of that some times when advising - but it's for the best of intentions; more bang for your buck. But, if funds are available, no harm in buying that which makes you happy - life's too short etc...

I actually made a similar cost build a little while back for a family member, surprise 50th thing. He can't build for himself anymore for various reasons.

I'm very much a person that suggests getting the absolute most out of a budget, but I feel when you're building a 5090 type rig in the 3k range it's worth spending a little more to be happy.

See the above, I'll try to get some pictures of it next I visit. I probably should have while building but my brain shuts off with some stuff.

Thanks as always guys.

Placing some orders tonight...i know the 5070ti is best bang for buck etc but im happy to just jump in at the 5080 will be nice from my 2080!

Will choose the Fractal north case :-) bonus points the mrs will like it.

Air cooler phantom spirit

1200w psu
X870
9800x3d
32gb ram
2tb nvme probably wipe and reuse my existing 1tb nvme aswell

Probably will reuse some of my case fans aswell see at the time

Sounds straightforward enough...

Thanks Gray sounds like a good thing you got involved with! I was 100% sure id be getting a 5090 and throwing 3.5 at it all but turns out itll be more like 2.5 with a 5080

Either way huge upgrade for me and will have room for whatever the future brings!

just remember the fractal north takes a max gpu length of 355mm or 300mm if putting rad in front..some of these 5080's are big....whole reason the brought out the xl case...more to do with front to back length rather than anything else, in order to accommodate larger gpu's..

I think i linked the wrong 1 sorry - not quite sure the differences but it was this one- https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...gddr7-pci-express-graphics-gra-gig-04127.html

I can get it for £1070 showing at 340mm so should be ok....

Yes, that is 140mm and the Master is 160mm which is where you may have got your original measurement. Gigabyte make a few incarnations of the 5080 which can get confusing - the usual incremental overclocks with better bins/cooling.

Why not get the North XL? The North won't fit under the table anyway will it?

The mid North is 215mm and he has 210mm to work with max - before his table becomes an amputee. From previous posts i 'think' he's toying with cutting the front left hand side leg - from drawer to base. From below pics that would easily free up another ~20mm as the case would then have the full use of width and length of the base/shelf (looking at first pic) - as long as the front left leg isn't critical for weight distribution.

@evertonhero, your build won't be light weight - using either interpretation.

ok guys ive sorted it....

XL North...

the shelf will be gone cutting / removing - then the pc will sit on the floor allowing plenty of space above it and more space inside!

leaving the desk secure....enough

If you wanted the base you you could try the below:

You would need to add plastic/rubber caps where you make the cuts to make it neat (have to be hand crafted or 3d printed). Then the case would be able to make full use of width and length of the base. If needed you could place a discrete block underneath base/shelf for additional support if needed (from floor to underside of shelf).

*May not be practical/more trouble than it's worth, now I've had time to think while posting...

*EDIT - i missed the want of the XL - but would work for the midi. Are you getting the Master?

haha thanks Plec its definitely doable but I realised its just to close to the drawer above it and no space to access the USB slots etc(even on my existing unit now its awkward) so the XL on the floor and chop off the bits in the way should work a treat

on that note.....The order is placed

MOBO - x870 £221
DDR 32GB £109.65
2TB SSD £106.24
Gigabyte 5080 £1070.15
9800X3D £424.99
1200W PSU £209.99
Phantom Spirit £44.99
XL North Case £152.94

£2339.95

Quality components and you won't be disappointed with the look of the case (although, I've only played with the midi).

I would pay money to see your face when you unpack the Phantom Spirit.

Best of luck. I'm scared to say 'we'll be here if you need any help during the build' after your last experience :D

Resist breaking mirrors with nun's faces and swinging black cats by their tails under ladders before this build!

My take away form those pics were...

You drink Dr Pepper? :bleah:

*Case looks great in XL. And you seem to have taken the size of the Spirit in your stride. After using the stock cooler on the 3600x(?), I thought you would be disconcerted by the size.

However, not surprised you just got on with it and built what you could. Your pragmatic approach is was kept me through your last build. Looks good - and I really hope this goes smoothly for you. (as an aside I'm on my third dishwasher - so perhaps I've ingested your bad luck for this build. ****ing nightmare not having a dishwasher with kids...),

And, like @Tetras, I'm looking forward to documented pics of you dismembering you table - Dremel or good ol' fashion hack?

*And a distinct lack of unicorns in this build (will you remember?)

I think because its a xl case suddenly there's room everywhere but yes wow the 5080 is a monster & the spirit is a monster! I can be very pragmatic...almost annoyingly so Mrs says if im any more laid back id be laying down

ahhh maybe you are tired from washing all the dishes but maybe someone more eagle eyed might of spotted a unicorn or 2 :P

dishwashers can be a pain dont envy you there! but on the third!? just blame the kids at this point haha

maybe abit of both for the cutting...might just strip it down take it outside use a grinder or something...not got that far mentally yet! all in time....

You didn't name your cute daughter Unicorn? :D

I can't see them - and it's usually very hard to get things past me (i've been looking out for them just in case you remembered.)

* EDIT: Found them - on the side table - the white/silver heads(?) by the black Bengal tiger!!!
