This specifically effects Phison PS5012-E12 controllers.

Phison has recently been made aware of the industry-wide effects of the 'KB5063878' and ‘KB5062660’ updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. We understand the disruption this may have caused and promptly engaged industry stakeholders.

We are steadfast in our commitment to product integrity and the success of our partners and end users. At this time, the controllers that may have been affected are under review and we are working with partners. We will continue to provide updates and advisories to partners who may have been impacted to provide support and ensure any applicable remediation.

I have not booted up my Windows partition in over a week now and still using Bazzite.

Not too sure what my drives use (Samsung 970 Evo and Samsung 980)

Well, I've two things going for me:
  1. I have a Samsung 990 Pro which doesn't appear to be affected by this issue
  2. I'm on Windows 10 :D
Neither of my NVME's are affected :) But I thought I'd post it for other people.
You looking forward to running out of support then;)
I do hate Windows 11, regardless though :D

I won't derail the thread completely, but I do plan to move to Windows 11 once I've upgraded to hardware that supports it.

It seem like accusation of fake news are not limited to politics...

In the meantime, Phison says it has recently become aware of a "falsified document" that has been passed off as having originated from within the company, and has reportedly been circulated to various customers. "We wish to state unequivocally that the document in question—reproduced below—is neither an official nor unofficial communication from Phison," the company told Tom's Hardware.

Specifically, the document includes false claims regarding the aforementioned storage and data issues pertaining to the August 12 Microsoft Windows Security Updates. Pulling no punches, Phison says it is addressing the circulation of the falsified document through "appropriate legal processes."

The fake document, pictured below, bears the title "Phison SSD Controller Issues Summary" and claims to include a table of affected controller models relating to the issue. As per Phison, none of this information is official. There is no information available as to the source of the fictitious document.

My main NVMEs are Samsung 990 Pros and SK hynix P41 Platinum (essentially same drive as the Solidigm) with the odd slightly older Samsung like the 980 so hopefully should dodge this issue though I've also got some Kingston ones I'm not sure if are affected but those systems are mostly on Windows 7 or 10 still.

Did you read that link, fully?
It states that although claiming it's soley only Phison that this affects, it states that it's other brands too.
So the only part that's false, is solely accusing it being a Phison issue, versus other brands as well?
On Tuesday, we reported that a Microsoft security update for Windows 11 appears to be causing SSD failures following heavy file transfers. While drives sporting Phison NAND controllers are amongst the drives affected, Phison's tech is not solely impacted, as was erroneously reported elsewhere. In a statement to Tom's Hardware, Phison confirmed it is aware of the issue and is investigating.

So that means this is still an issue, just not soley with Phison.
So not entirely fake news at all.

I didn't say it was, i thought the section i quoted was pretty clear that Phison were claiming the document was fake.

How or why your takeaway was the entire thing was fake IDK, particularly as i posted about this very thing in the Windows 11 thread two day ago.
Oh, I apologize then, sorry I took your mention of fake news, and how short you were, to imply all of it was a lie.
I never saw your post on Monday in that thread.
I replied, with what I said, so that other people knew that this was not the case, and the issue was still real, but not limited to just Phison :)
Sorry about that, my mistake :)

I'm 6' 2" :D

From what i can tell it's real, Phison have confirmed it is. Personally i also suspect their claims that the leaked document "is neither an official nor unofficial communication" is BS, obviously I've got nothing but my sense to go on but something doesn't smell right about their statement, you'd kind of expect something more along the lines we are unaware of where it came from rather than a definitive statement that it's neither an official nor unofficial. (Could that be a translation thing maybe, IDK)

TBH i was going to push back on brendy when he tried to brush it off as being only one source on X in the Win11 thread but i just CBA, i mean he was right but IMO when it comes to data one report is enough for me. Not worth having a hissy fit over but certainly enough to remind you to backup your data and dbl check things.

Yeah, I did wonder if that was the case too. Seems like a textbook denial reaction, as with the lawsuit.

Yep, it's as good enough warning, to immediately do a backup and check if you're affected!

The takeaway from this is, unsurprisingly, is **** Windows/why are we surprised

This is why I don't bother doing regular updates :D

Annoying business do and last month MS broke hyper-v clustering.

Microsoft is seeking further information from customers who reported failure and data corruption issues affecting their solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs) after installing the August 2025 security update.

Microsoft told BleepingComputer on Wednesday that it is aware of reports that installing the KB5063878 security update is causing SSD and HDD data corruption and failure issues.

In a service alert seen by BleepingComputer, the company added that it couldn't reproduce the issue on up-to-date Windows 11 24H2 systems and is now attempting to collect user reports with additional information from those affected.

"We are actively working with our storage device partners to try to reproduce the issue. At the time of this publication, neither internal testing nor telemetry have identified an increase in disk failure or file corruption," the company said.

"In addition, Microsoft customer support teams haven't received reports of customers experiencing this issue. If you are experiencing this issue, please contact Support for Business or use the Feedback Hub to file a report.

The company is also investigating if this issue is Microsoft's fault and has promised to provide an update when more details are available.

It makes you wonder what use all this telemetry is for, other than to ram adverts in our faces.
