At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

My days of desktops are done, have a Legion RTX 4080 laptop, its a bit more powerful than desktop 4070 so I knew what I was getting, I wasn't fooled by the "naming".
Jumped from a 4790k 1080ti desktop so it was a nice bump in performance.
I was quoted another £650 to get the "4090" GPU upgrade two years ago. The difference between the 4080m and 4090m is not £650 worth.
If I want to buy that exact setup now, new from a well known retailer, i would be paying the exact amount if I had upgraded, TWO YEARS AGO!!

That must be extremely loud when gaming, though? Being a laptop?

The cooling on the Legion Pro 7i is pretty good on its own but after a few months I bought a Llano laptop cooler to go with it. If I game on it, it's through my TV.
I bought a Razer Turret gaming keyboard for the Xbox but it's used exclusively with my laptop. I've barely touched my laptop keyboard in the two+ years I have had it.

Finding the sweet spot for CPU watts and GPU watts, paired with the cooler to minimise noise, heat and thermal throttling. Headphones help as well :D

Ah nice, that's good then!
Yeah, it's all about balance :) and if all else fails, headphones FTW! :D

Looking through this thread again, I realised that prices mean I have close to zero interest in a meaningful upgrade and now browse this thread mostly out of habit.

I used to get excited about a new generation, and when I'd be buying in. Now I fully expect it to be a five year (or more) upgrade cycle.

I can afford £500+, but won't be paying that.

Similar, just not excited by it any more.

I paid 959 quid for this card, but that was after getting a couple of grand bonus so didn't miss it. No way would I have done that in a normal month.

That said, I have enjoyed this card for 18 months and looking at the 5000 series and in particular the 5080, it becomes a 'better' purchase as time goes by.

I doubt I'll even get on the 6000 series train unless the 80 series is massively improved.

I just checked eBay for chuckles to see what a 4090FE is going for these days, I am astounded. I paid £1500 back in 2023, and they're selling for more than that still.

Mostly play Hunt Showdown these days and soon Battlefield 6 so the 4090FE is wasted, seriously considering punting it on for a 9070XT and banking the difference.

I know the 9070 XT isn’t a 4090 but I can vouch for it - it’s a cracking card and plays my games at 4k no issues

I've been reading reports in the last few days that 50 series cards in Europe have been enjoying a price drop but have noticed that the UK is following this - any information is Overclockers are going to do a price drop soon?

Interesting. I’m a few pixels fewer at 3440 UW. Which card have you got out of interest?
I just moved from 3440UW to 4k and FPS did get smacked down considerably on 4090 - it's quite a bit more than few pixels. That 4k has 3.5 million pixels more than that UW one (about 64% more). Still, with dlss and fsr (4 preferably), 4090 really isn't necessary to be playable and it looks fine. If I had to buy GPU now it would be 9070XT as it has no competition in the price range in stores usually.

Red devil - managed to get it for £590 brand new from somewhere ‘very’ good.. ;) on 20% off first BNPL and just paid it off. Got it to -45 mv -20% PL so draws upto 265 watts and 2714mhz VRAM. Boosts typically around 3.0ghz and stays at 30% fan so very silent. I did have it at 1440p 170hz… now driving 4k 144hz. BO6 100+ fps at all time 4k maxed out :)
