Hi all

I was looking at my motherboard and what upgrade options I have. I use the PC for gaming and photography processing with DXO Photolab. I had a look at the Motherboard CPU options and noticed mine supports a Ryzen 7 5800x3D CPU.

My question is for gaming is this a better option than my current Ryzen 9 5900x CPU?

I googled and some say for gaming i would benefit using the 5800x3D.

I intend to replace the whole system in a year or so as its 5 years old but want to check if this small upgrade is worth considering.

If you're going to replace it in a year or so then not really. But honestly you're better off waiting for AM6. If you upgrade to AM5 next year then you're stuck with a dead-end platform the moment you bought it.

AM6 desktop parts could be a while away yet. AM5 has support until 2027.

Thanks for this. I was not aware that AM6 is due next year. Much appreciate that info.

5800x3D CPU.
the trouble is finding one for sale new is nigh on impossible, so just drop the 5700X3D in there and limp on until AM6 this is your best option 7600x3d is a great cpu, and will only struggle to run a 4900, or better, best paired with a 5070 tbh

sorry it's 2027  but as i say in all other threads to AM4 users...

the thing with buying AM5 now is that you "only" have 1 generation left of CPU upgrades
if you max out am4 now with a 5700x3d/5800x3d, then you won't need to upgrade to am5 and can skip the whole AM5 generation altogether...your next big upgrade will be am6 or the intel equivalent
if you buy into am5 now, in a few years you'd be asking the same question: max out am5 or jump to am6/intel equivalent

Appreciate all the replies. I should have added I recently upgraded my monitor to 4K. So starting to push things a little with my old RTX 3080 GPU.

umm im pretty sure thats an AM5 CPU wont fit in an AM4 Board unless you want to solder some pins on it and hack the bios :D

just go am5. the cost of a second hand 5800x3d is about £250... the cost of a 7800x3d is about £250
sell your mobo cpu and ram(£300) to cover the cost of a new b650e (£100) and 32gb of DDR5(£70) and just buy a 7800x3d

the total outlay will be about the same

i dont think that ones out until 2035 either .. :D
5700X3D. The one below the 5800x3d as per OP, the one in the OP, which is hard to get new, leaving, the readily available 5700X3D, which is what I, and others, are advising! (but I think you know that anyway)
