I’ve got the UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 TB4 NVMe Enclosure and a 1.92TB Corsair Force MP510 NVMe drive in it. Works perfectly as the boot drive with MacOS installed on it and no compatibility or heat issues.

I’ve got one of the ugreen enclosures with a WD Black 1TB drive and it works ok most of the time but then sometimes doesn’t. With that and the two Samsung usb 3 drives anything else refuses to work or they just don’t get detected.

I’ve had my UGREEN CM642 40Gbps M.2 TB4 NVMe Enclosure with the 1.92TB Corsair MP510 drive in it since mid March 2025 used everyday as the boot drive for my Mac mini M4.

In the five months since it’s never failed on me once, there’s also a CM850 version which had heat issues according to a review here…

I don’t know which one you have.

Here's mine, MacOS sees the external NVMe as the internal drive...

I think the success you have with an external drive depends not only on the enclosure you use but also which NVMe drive you use.

I've seen various mounts for sale. Did you print yours yourself?
Remember the Studio was brand new when I got mine, nobody had brackets, there were no designs.

I bought this. At the time it was $65, I don't want to go into how much they stitched me for shipping! There are now plenty on Amazon for under thirty quid or Ali for less than half that.

Sent the Ex400u back, the M4 wouldn't even boot with it attached to the TB5 ports, worked ok on the front USB-C but was very slow. Tried different cables including the UGreen one that is running my NVME enclosure with the WD Black drive in.

Need to decided what I want to do with storage and whether I bite the bullet and buy a NAS and drop the locally attached drives.

I’ve been using an EX400U on my M4 MBA no problems for a while, it’s my my video editing drive so gets a good thrashing.

You’re not having much luck with external drives. Even if you use a 10 Gbps NAS it will only be as fast as front USB-C ports on a mini.

You do t know the half of it I tried three or four enclosures before I stuck with the Ugreen. I want to consolidate down from the drives I have, the WD is quick and I want something like that for the VMs and then just something bigger for general storage and a Time Machine.

If you want a second nvme enclosure, I like this Hagibis 40Gbps USB4 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure With LED Display USB4 Cable for Thunderbolt 4/3 USB 3.2/3.1/3.0 B+M M-Key SSD Case

Fanless, cools well, £50 ish.

Not toolless and you need to be careful when putting it together so not to strip the screws. But it performs on par with the OWC.

Think I’ll return the studio and order one with the bumped up M4 Max, more RAM, and 2TB SSD. Probably completely unnecessary but I intend to keep it for a good 10 years.

Tempted to do the same to be honest before I blow £1k on an iPhone which honestly I don't need as I rarely use it.

Yeah I'm using 132GB of my 1.92TB External drive. My internal drive is 256GB so that would be half of it used already. I've only got a few apps installed on top of the default MacOS apps and my Windows 11 VM using 64GB.

Good choice.
I know it adds more to the cost, but there's a lot to be said for having the right amount of internal storage and not having to faff about.
Question is, do I add the £199 Pro Apps Bundle for Education, or leave that and opt for Davinici instead. Will be editing drone footage mainly.
