EV general discussion

I’m not arguing people should do it or not, I’m just pointing out the fact that on most cars (FWD) the fronts tend to wear out more than the rears.

Is that a fact? Yes (this can’t be argued frankly)
Should you care? Well that’s up to you

Just pointing out it’s in the manual.

I did mine as I like them to wear even and looking to replace with different tyres when they are worn down.

Same, I rotate my tyres every 3000 miles and they wear down within 0.1mm. The benefit of doing is I can happily replace all four at once and if I want to I can switch to a different model or brand, rather than doing on or two here or there, end up with mismatched tyres like a lot of cars on the road

I only did it so they wear evenly I’m looking to replace all 4 with something else and having odd front and rear does my ocd in so for me it’s the best solution to get the most wear out of them.

Although it’s AWD it’s also rear biased most of the time so makes sense the rears will wear a little quicker.

Yes most cars are.

But we were specially talking about the ioniq 5 manual here which isn’t fwd.

As you say owners choice at end of the day. Think we can agree there. But still an odd manual on that car. Do they expect owners to change battery fluid too ?

Currently 7p for any mile. HMRC changes, not sure where they get 51p/kWh public charging rate from though.

From 1 September 2025 the advisory electric rates for fully electric cars will be:

  • 8 pence per mile for home charging
  • 12 pence per mile for public charging
The ‘slow or fast public charge cost per kilowatt-hour’ is the Zapmap public charging price index monthly published figure for slow or fast chargers (charging speed less than 50 kilowatts), uprated with the latest estimate of electricity prices from the Office for National Statistics.

A higher amount than the advisory rates can be used as long as you can show that the fuel cost per mile is higher. Therefore, if the public charger used is higher in cost per mile than the new advisory rate introduced for public charging, a higher rate can be used as long as you can show the cost per mile is higher.

See this is another mis conception. “Most the time” doesn’t mean most of the duty cycle. Torque coming in under high power is the issue.

Dont be surprised when you realise it’s the front that wear first.

i4 arrived. they really are bare bones unless you put on the optional extras.
E drive 40 m sport with tech pack, heated steering wheel, 19's, electric retractable towbar (for a bike rack).
Bit disappointed about the seats, I thought they were going to have adjustable bolsters like the demo one I tried but it didn't have them. I'll get used to it.

That silver/chrome grill surround though is terrible, everything else is shadowline so why have have that?!

Straight off to have window tints done, grill wrapped, new numberplates without the green stripe and debaged.
Looks like a normal car now :D

Incoming headache for payroll depts trying to implement a way of paying different mileage rates depending on what type of electricity was used for what proportion of a business journey and employees agreeing with it :p

the grille surround in black is so much better than silver
I still do not know what BMW were thinking with the fugly grilles. it's not like they didn't used to make good looking front ends. the rest of the car is nice. (all subjective of course but I do not know anyone who likes those massive grilles)

Wasn't it 'Chinese market likes big grilles' theory? Modern BMWs are very divisive cars though, certainly I've gone right off them :D
quite possibly. some of the Chinese executive cars are hideous too!. that said BMW is a European company. it is sad if they are prioritising china over their home turf. also would it be too much to ask to have a slightly different front end for the Chinese market if that is the case .

again I know it's subjective but this is so much nicer imo

They were designed before China had really good home grown vehicles though and China is the biggest market for BMW, most of Europe and US put together equals what they sell in China, for now.

Yeah and there is something about claiming more if the cost is higher.

I would expect most businesses to ignore that bit, that's been the case for petrol/diesel for as long as I can remember but rarely ever known anyone get more, even when fuel prices spiked.

Might be time to join the EV club for us. Old ICE car died and repairs write it off now really.

Wife wants SUV style as prefers higher up driving position. I'm fine with this as we have ridiculous speed bumps round here so higher ride height better.
We do lots of small trips. Mileage a non issue. We already have a 7kw home charger from when we moved in. Works fine but it's older gen I guess. We want a spacious EV with a nice big boot. Play golf and ferry kids about. We used to have a 7 seater Smax but don't really utilise the 7 seats much these days and I can see you pay a premium for 7 seats and there is less selection.

I'm completely out of the loop. Well, I was never in it. I can't get any BIC tax break stuff through work so there's that. I don't think we are confident enough to buy second hand but would consider it. Otherwise I'm prepared to get rinsed on a monthly lease I guess then hand it back after 2 years. Any advice? I'm on Octopus tracker but have smart meters. Not sure if they are modern enough for cheaper night EV tariff. We don't have solar.

What's the price range you are looking at? Quite a lot of options in that SUV size segment and price ranges.
