EV general discussion

Wife wants SUV style as prefers higher up driving position
Fat eTron 20/21-plate if you want premium comfort and don't care about range or efficiency.

Ioniq 5 if you fancy a nice modern looking car with a very spacious inside, fast charging speeds for longer journeys and reasonable efficiency.

If you fancy something different, Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Or as an alternate premium Korean Genesis GV60.

Do not buy new unless you are made of money and must have the latest plate.

3 year old ‘SUVs’ are ten a penny in the EV space and are literally half the price in most cases and many are still under full warranty on the entire car.

Kia 7 years, Hyundai - 7 years, MG - 7 years, Tesla 4 years etc. it’s mainly the European brands that have shorter warranties.

Almost every car on the market has an 8 year warranty on the battery and motor.

Most of the rest of the car is ‘just a car’, there isn’t any need to be more concerned about buying used any more than buying a used ICE car.

Hyundai is 5 years for the car.

Battery warranty does not cover the motor only the high voltage battery. All EV’a now have a minimum 8 years or 100,000mile high voltage battery warranty it was set by government.

Just remember it needs to have been serviced as per the schedule with evidence of it being done. One of my friends is currently in a battle with Audi as he was 40 days late for a service and they are refusing any cover at all on a 2 year old car.

Ioniq 5 is also a 2022 ‘cool car’ that has aged horrifically bad.

Also needs some weird battery fluid service for £600 at 40k miles that no other EV seems to need yet

It came out in 2021.

Coolant is £549 inc the 40k 4 year service you don’t have to have it at Hyundai. Kia EV6 is also the same and a few others from Hyundai/Kia.

The E-GMP platform has the same service process, who would have thunk it? What else is done in that 40k service.

There those ellipsis again, you are allowed to to finish sentences you know.

Cars generally only get ‘cool’ and into peoples head space once it’s been see out and about! I do hate it when people get a certain car and become all myopic about it.

I presume you are referring to me ?

From MY 2024 Ioniq 5s do not have that requirement, its mostly an inspection and top up if required, or at worse the scheduled year/mileage has increased.

no comment on the battery service but as far as aged badly I liked it at launch and i still like it now. I love it when something I like is considered old hat or no longer "cool" to the masses. it means I get to grab a bargain.

it's almost as good as a bit of badge snobbery on "cheap" brand car

Well I think it aged badly. Am I wrong for thinking that.

Bargain. My bmw M costs less for that service. I thought EVs were cheap to service ?

Not clear that other cars like vw id's don't have similar coolant service checks too (at similar costs ?)

Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5

The all-electric ID family has different maintenance needs:

  • Every 20,000 miles or 24 months:
    • Brake fluid replacement
    • Cabin air filter replacement
    • Tyre rotation
  • Every 40,000 miles:
    • Coolant system check
  • Every 60,000 miles:
    • Drive unit fluid replacement
after ioniq 5 coolant check&cost was initially raised several pages back appeared this can just be a check and top-up too

It’s a change

It’s all to do with the ability to charge at 250kwh + and using an 800v system when I asked my dealer. It’s not ideal but it is what it is I suppose.
