The last game you completed, and rating.

I loved the game, but, like you, I wasn't massively sold on some of the late swerves.

My problem was that the reveal at the end of act 2 that everything was happening inside a world-within-a-world felt like it cheapened a lot of what had come before that point. I also wasn't a fan of changing the stakes from "save humanity" to "resolve a family drama", which felt very George Lucas.
That was absolutely my problem too! The emotional investment you had from trying to save all of the people you have met is suddenly gone.

Stalker: Shadow of Chornobyl Enhanced - 7/10

Loved the original. I've played it through loads of times, especially with mods. Glad this was free as it's simply a PC release of last years console port. Smoother and more stable than the original but the graphics and textures haven't really been upgraded. 4K and FSR support isn't that exciting. No real gameplay enhancements or bug fixes. Played most of it on the Steam Deck which was a decent experience with the added controller support.

Overall, it's probably still worth just playing the original, particularly with the plethora of excellent mods and community patches available.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth - 8/10...I think.

Not sure I've ever loved and hated a game this much to be honest. There's so much I think is truly special but it's wrapped in so much bloat, fan service and the developers sniffing their own farts that I'm not even sure I could subject myself to another playthrough ever again. The world itself is better than I ever thought possible but what they filled it with however was absolutely awful. The same boring, monotonous checklists where you press triangle 3 times or climb a ******* tower like I'm playing Assassin's Creed. The main cast of characters were everything I thought they were almost 30 years ago if not better (I actually felt something at the end this time around) and the way they expanded most of the original content was handled extremely well. The characters themselves and the way they interacted with each other is by far the best part of this game imo. I like the combat too, it's a nice hybrid between action and turn based, the amount of forced party switches and having to switch everyone's gear and materia around wore extremely thin by the end however.

Even the main quest feels bloated. Far too many drawn out mandatory minigames, some of the expanded areas like the mansion lab and Mt. Corel didn't feel necessary at all in my opinion and while I enjoy the boss fights in these games, when they're throwing 4 or 5 ten minute bosses at you in a row it gets incredibly exhausting. This game, and the remake to a lesser extent, suffer heavily from the fact they split it up into 3 games. Instead of a single 40-50 hour main story they have to make it so you feel like you're getting your money's worth so everything gets drawn out which lessens the core experience. I think a single game encompassing Midgar to the end of Rebirth would have flowed so much better though I do recognise that the visual aspect of the games would likely have taken a hit in that scenario.

Story wise it's alright I guess. It's got that modern Square Enix flavour to it which I'm not a huge fan of to be honest but I've seen worse. My only real annoyance is how involved Sephiroth is.

I'm confused here, the original wasn't 3 games?

TBF a lot of your issues sound just like the original too, and while I've been daydreaming about replaying it some day, I don't know if I'd have the patience and time. I'm no longer an excited teenager willing to read pages and pages of dialogue and ship myself around the map for mini games and story sections in the same way...

Finished RE2 remake (Leon A, Claire B) the other night. I don't generally like boiling games down to a number, but gun to my head... A strong 8/10.

Loved the atmosphere and it was pretty tense throughout. Just as you start to feel comfortable it throws something else at you. The police station is so good. The sewers and labs fell off a bit, but they did in the original game as well. Mr X upped the stakes and was fun for a bit, but became tedious whilst learning his mechanics. So many times in my early encounters he'd despawn where I'd just come from and teleport into the corridor or area in front of me which felt a bit game-y. I also disliked how inconsistent some of the mechanics were like the zombie grabs and silent ninja zombies hiding right on corners and through doorways. And **** those sewer monsters. At least one point docked for those alone...

Robocop: Rogue City: Unfinished Business - 5/10

I played it so you don't have to. It's not worth your money or your time. It's horribly... erm... unfinished. Riddled with bugs and performance issues, including possibly the worst UE5 stutter I've ever seen. Some areas become a judder-fest on a 7950X3D/5090 combo, even though the "baseline" framerate is fine. Beyond that, it's generally unpolished. Subtitles are filled with typos and sometimes don't match the dialogue. Lip sync is broken. Some voice lines are read in a really discordant manner, which implies the voice actors hadn't been briefed properly on the context for their lines.

It completely wastes a potentially good setting. There's no sense of working your way up through a gigantic skyscraper. Instead, it's just a sequence of generic video-game hallways and corridors. Sidequests are short and not particularly good compared to Rogue City's. The story is forgettable.

It's not 100% negative. The gunplay is still fun, the new enemies and weapons are decent and ultimately, the game's over quite quickly (8.5 hours for me). There's one mission where you play as a long-running series icon which is kinda cool. But overall, you can skip this one, even if you liked Rogue City.

CoD Modern Warfare II campaign - 8/10

Really enjoyed it. A few crashes, but at least the drivers were stable this time. Decent story, great visuals, fun gameplay, varied missions. It’s a shame III then becomes such a farce. Another gamepass victory.

marvels spiderman 2 - 6/10

I enjoyed it to start with but once you get some gadgets and suit powers unlocked its way to easy, The combat is just spamming powers and gadgets = boring.
The boss fights were all the same just a different boss skin plus they all have 3+ health bars so it drags on and involves no skill just dodge, spam, dodge over and over.
The story was awful, too much CRYderman not enough action. The MJ bits were terrible. All the characters were unlikeable.
Lots of bugs, crashes and glitches but this could have been crappy nvidea drivers not just a crappy port.
I much prefered the first game and the miles morales add on.

Yakuza 3 Remastered - 7.5/10

As I expected, going from the Kiwami games to the remasters felt pretty rough, but I did adapt to it. Once I got into the game properly, I enjoyed it, but my god it is a slow starter. Depending on how you pace the substories, it takes around a third to half of the game's total run-time for the story to pick up pace. Even by Yakuza series standards, that's slow.

The story is decent when it gets going, but doesn't quite hit the highs of Zero, Kiwami or the later RPG-based games. There's a distinct telenovela vibe to it at times, particularly around one particular plot twist. That said, I enjoyed a more straightforward story, after the ridiculous endgame contortions of Kiwami 2. Some of the substories are also excellent.

Onto Yakuza 4 Remastered next...

Do you not get burnt out playing those back to back? Considering the places you visit for a lot of them are the same and the combat etc is too.

Mafia: The Old Country

I had hopes for this one sadly the meat of the game is a letdown. Combat is absolutely terrible, the A.I is dense to say the least and the stealth is terrible and the driving clunky (granted, not exactly modern cars)

The story is quite predictable but fine I suppose, nothing outstanding. The semi-open world however, is very pretty and nice to explore at least for a while I just wish there was a lot more to do in it.

Aspects that it does get right is the voice acting is excellent, as is the motion capture/animations. Very well done in this regard. The music is also very good.

Sadly, these are not enough to save it from overall mediocrity, as such, a 4/10 is all I can reasonably give it. :(

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I think I’d have to say 10/10 for this. There’s a few little niggles here and there in the gameplay, but it’s about as good a game as you could hope for. It nails the atmosphere of an old Indiana Jones film, and that goes a long way in carrying this. The voice acting and motion capture are great, and the story and adventuring are fun. I really enjoyed it. Enough that I made the effort (with the help of some online guides) to get all the collectibles and achievements, which I never normally do.

Out of interest, what would you give the Mafia 1 remake?

As remakes go I'd say it's fairly solid. It has been quite a while since I last played it (checked and it was back in 2020) but it was still enjoyable like the original just updated visuals and a few small tweaks.
Score wise, I would give it a 7/10 as it's quite a faithful remake that stuck to the original and improved what it could. I would certainly buy that over Mafia: The Old Country.

It's also on sale at the moment for a measly £5.24 so well worth picking up.

Thanks! I wondered as some people moan about it, I completed it twice when it came out on PS4, it had some bugs but only crashed once, I loved it.

Dying Light 2 - 7/10

I found the core game very fun, more of the same and expanded upon from the first game. Terrible last couple hours of the story though, certainly echo other user's thoughts who said it felt like a giant waste of time.

Sniper Elite 5 - 7/10

Well it gave me 30 hours of entertainment. Kind of lost its sniper aspect to the game because to get through hordes of nazi's you had to turn into a ww2 John Rambo to get complete some of the levels. AI is still dumb much like the previous games. Liked the story line and will more then likely buy the next installment.
