*** The official 2023 and 2024 Mac mini thread (it has the M2 chip, the M4 chip and everything!) ***

It was but also means a lot of software and some hardware are no longer supported. Like the Wedding Album design lifetime licence software only works for the intel macs, not the Apple Silicon one, the company moved to a subscription model, so I still have to boot up the iMac or use my 2017 MBP for that.
Oh, does it not work using Rosetta then?

I only tried it once when i got the Mac Mini and it wouldn't install. Not sure how to run it through Rosetta or if that works automatically?
If it's an Intel based app, if Rosetta isn't already enabled you'll be prompted to install it when you launch the app. It will take a short while but it should just launch and behave normally.

£1186 for 15" MBA M4 with 512SSD seems decent and I'm back to square 1.
Honestly, the M4 MBA is the end game of lightweight laptops. Battery for days, beautifully made, thin, light, enough CPU/GPU/MediaEngine grunt to do the vast majority of tasks. Mine is my only machine now I've sold my PC. It does all the full stack development stuff I need for work, runs docker images. Crunches my 6k/4k video editing work for my YouTube. Runs my 6k display perfectly. The screen is great.

Cheers, I forgot about docker (though using Rancher now for whatever reason). I guess with that stuff I don't need to worry about it throttling.

£997.50 for 15" 256gb but that size makes me nervous even though I can use external etc.

£1187.50 for 15" 16Gb/512GB, £190 extra for 256gb extra SSD (still salty about not being able to change these)
Edit: Glad I checked elsewhere, Very of all places are giving 10% of the order back, so this spec would be £1124.10

£1377.50 for the 24GB, that's nearly £200 for 8gb ram so I think it doesn't make any sense.

Annoyingly, sometimes the vouchers I get are boosted to like 7.5% instead of 5% which would make a bit of difference. Just checking I can't get it cheaper but I can't see how other than waiting but then I'm getting close to the "might as well wait for the refresh zone".

Also dumb question but do these come with a charger, only asking as on Apple you have a choice of two.

Little thread bump but has anyone gone down the route of replacing the SSD (on a M4 Mini) with an aftermarket solution? If so, what SSD/manufacturer did you end up using and how have you got on since the upgrade?

I'm looking at spec'ing a 24 or 32GB (RAM) Mini with pauper spec 256GB SSD and then doing the DIY upgrade. I'm currently looking at https://m4-ssd.com or https://expandmacmini.com and whilst there's a good load of users that haven't had problem, i have seen a few reports of users having issues like SSD's failing (after so long) or performance not being particularly great. So i was just wondering if anyone on here has done it :)

Is there a reason why you're not wanting to add storage via TB 4 dock and SSD?

How do you get around the constant notifications about the storage not being ejected properly?

I’ve been trying this method with my MacBook Air and it’s vey annoying. I guess it’s less hassle with a Mac Mini, but I’m sure you can’t get away from it entirely.

Performance, not every app can be offloaded to external storage, flakey docks, lose a port, cost (decent dock + NVMe is similar to these internal SSD upgrades) etc.

I know someone that has upgraded their Studio (Polysoft SSD) and haven't had issues but the M4 Mini upgrades still seem fairly new hence wondering if anyone here has done it.

Each to their own, I need a dock anyway for multiple monitors and other things. Performance is fine for me some occasional thermal throttling and never had a not being ejected properly as I never eject it :p. Clearly for Macbook that's a completely different scenario

I upgraded my base spec M4 mini to 2TB using the Sandisk kit from Avit store on Aliexpress back in July, have had no issues at all. I'm not too worried about failure as I do a nightly Time Machine backup.

I would probably look at doing the same if all apps could be installed to an external drive but outside of the App Store you're reliant on the Dev/installer allowing you to install elsewhere, ie - Microsoft Office (not the App Store variant).

I wouldn't even consider it until the device is out of AppleCare.
It shouldn't void warranty nor affect AppleCare within the EU as long as any issue wasn't directly caused by the third-party upgrade - keeping the original drive would no doubt help here.

Plus with what you save, doing the upgrade yourself versus what Apple charge, you can near enough buy another Mini anyway.

Good to know.
I did have a look at a few on Aliexpress although i am a bit weary going that route even though it's likely there is probably only a few manufacturers of the SSD boards and M4-SSD and the likes ship the exact same item albeit with a slightly markup (over Aliexpress).

Out of interest, how much did you end up paying for your 2TB drive once it landed in the UK? Assuming you got stung with VAT/import duty etc?

I don't know what that tax refund is all about, I didn't have to pay any separate import fees.

If you go through Aliexpress click through Topcashback first as they often offer 10 to 20% discount.

you can make your own kit from UK stock for not dissimilar money.

I picked up a Samsung Evo plus 2tb for £96 on the weekend
You can get a UGREEN 40gpbs enclosure (or others) for about £60-70. The fanless one would be the one i'd get.

Just be careful about competitor talk please, when discussing these Mac mini kits. it's not generally an issue in the Apple forums, but OcUK do sell SSDs/NVMEs.

I think i'm going to see what deals are to be had on (Black) Friday and take it from there.

That's an external drive not internal which i would do if it wasn't for some of the limitations, such as not all apps can be installed to the external drive.

Looks like a bargain for 2TB although it doesn't look like Avit sell the kits anymore. Although i can see others stores on AliExpress have the Sandisk version so may go down that route given it's about £100/150 cheaper than the "brand" versions. Cheers for that!

You can make an external to work like an internal.

Is that running the entire OS off the external drive? Or is there a foolproof solution to running all apps (not just App Store apps) from the external drive?

I know you can move your user profile to an external drive, which has it's own potential issues, but every time i've tested installing apps to an external drive, apps like Microsoft Office (not the App Store variant) or Xcode either won't allow you to install to the external drive or only parts of the app will but other parts (Xcode sims etc) will always continue to install to the internal drive.
