**** The Official Apple September Event thread - Tuesday 9th September 2025 @ 18:00 BST ****

I’m glad you asked. I came in to ask the same.

I use my Apple TV every single day (current gen with network adapter)
I don’t think it’ll make any difference to me. I have an AppleTV plugged into my telly and it’s used mainly for YouTube and Plex.

I have noticed that on AppleTV+ actually but how will it make a difference?
By passing the audio straight through to your AV amp or soundbar, the audio processing should be quicker and so not be out of sync with the video. Should be. Theoretically. Quality wise, pass through retains the sound quality of the original audio and doesn’t tamper with it in any way.

Ah, the old Apple TV and external amp lip sync issues. Plagued me for years, one thing I don't miss about that setup. I have Sonos now, and it generally just works.

All I have is the AppleTV plugged into the telly via HDMI.

Do you think the reason I don't get that problem is because I use AirPods for sound on the AppleTV? I genuinely don't know. I'm not up to speed on TV stuff.

I have to adjust the audio delay on my amp to get correct sync on Apple TV but that’s been the same with pretty much any source input for me, there’s always a slight difference depending on what image and sound processing is going on. I’ve never found the HDMI auto lip sync stuff to really work properly without some tweaking. Thankfully it seems to not change much over time although for the first time I think a recent Apple TV update did change something as the sync changed a little.

I just assumed for people who it works for they have no AVR, less complex signal chains and probably also not LG TVs which can apparently be a bit hit and miss. Also you could just be lucky that audio and video differences are close enough that you don’t personally pick up on it and the delays on both are similar.

I'm very sensitive to lip sync being out, even the tiniest bit annoys me terribly. Until it was mentioned above, I'd sort of forgotten about how bad streaming stuff from AppleTV+ can be because I've just not done it for a very long time.

If this change does make any difference to that, for a basic ATV to telly via HDMI then it's a good thing.

My iPhone 14 does everything (apart from AI) so I’m going to wait until 2027 for the all glass iPhone 20th anniversary model

If I'm 100% honest I'd do the same waiting for the iPhone Fold but that might be somewhere between 1 and 5 years so yeah...

I've got a 15 Pro so likely I won't be buying anything, however I might be tempted if the on/off rumour of a anti-reflective display appears.
