DaVinci is free right? Depends if you see yourself using the apps in the Pro Apps Bundle for Education.
Ah, I think there's a paid option but I won't be doing anything fancy.

Anyway:

Code:
Mac Studio

Hardware:
2TB SSD storage
64GB unified memory
Back: Four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB‑A ports, HDMI port, 10Gb Ethernet port, headphone jack
Front: Two USB-C ports, SDXC card slot
Apple M4 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
Accessory Kit

Ordered. :o:cry::D Figured I'd bump the CPU up. Damn you Apple.

Had to arrange the return of the current unit via chat for some reason.

Did you go refurb as thats where i got mine through, same apart from the storage where I've got the 1TB.

Could you give the model details of what TB4 UGreen enclosure you got?

First unit was via refurb store, the order just now is direct from Apple albeit with NUS discount. I also got 3 year AppleCare+ as it's cheaper via the NUS store.

This is the UGREEN NVMe enclosure, it's £69.99 and does get the advertised performance tested on a few NVMe drives I have.

Code:
UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, Aluminum NVMe Enclosure w/ Dual-Sided Fin Heat Sink, No-Fan-Noise M.2 Enclosure Compatible Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 for MacBook Pro M4, Mac Mini M4, Up to 3848MB/s

Assume that’s direct connected to the rear TB ports?
Yes mate, using the very short included cable. I have a bunch of NVMe's laying around I haven''t got around to selling so the idea was to use it as a TM backup to use to restore the replacement Studio.

Thanks I've ordered one with a new 2TB NVME to go in it and see what happens. I may try it with the WD Black 850 I've got and see if its an improvement over the existing one, if so that one can go back and I'll order a 2nd one

I've got the paid version of Da Vinci, IIRC the hardware decoding for 10-bit 4k footage is gated behind the Studio version....worth checking it out depending on what footage you're using.

No qualms about paying for it myself, amazing bit of software. I use quite a few of the paid features, auto subtitle generation, some of the AI sharpening stuff etc.

Thanks, the drone I'm looking at is 4k 8 bit, I'll give the free version a go once I've made my mind up on which drone to get.

Mine turned up with an SN7100 2TB drive earlier, plugged it in with all the other drives and its working fine, so time to return the other one and buy another of these. Thanks for the recommendation

Happy days.
Returned arrange and ordered a second already, so hopefully it'll be more stable then the other UGreen one which has been ok, but a bit hit and miss. New one is reporting >3500MBps read write so very happy with that, whilst not quite as quick as the internal drive, more than enough to run VMs.

It's a big step up to the TB5 version, outside of specific workflows or benchmarks I doubt you'd notice any difference.

Thats what I'd thought and the 200+ for the TB5 versions just seemed massive overkill. Had the second to replace the other UGreen enclosure turn up, shutdown swap the drive, plug in boot and everything is working perfectly. So now have all my external drives working properly and quick.they look quite neat as well but will shuffle my desk around a bit to get them sitting better. Like they are fanless the other enclosure sounded almost like a spinning disk at times with the fan spinning up and down.

Replacement Studio turned up. Well, it turned up last Monday but I was in Majorca. Set up today, and restored from the returned Studio via Time Machine.

Code:
Apple M4 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory
2TB SSD storage

Much happier, and should last me a long time.

Lovely Chris. Mine’s ’only’ an M1 Ultra but I’m genuinely not in the slightest bit jealous, just happy someone has got a real spanker of a system. I have zero idea what cores mine has.
