Changing careers near 40

I am doing something similar to yourself. Although not electrician but a pilot. Smashed our savings and took some money out of the house as our mortgage was basically finished.

I started last summer when I was 38 and it has taken me 9 months to get my Private Pilots Licence. I did it in 47 hours which was better than the majority of the kids in my flying school and they don't have to juggle work, kids and a house. Age is just a number. Starting my commercial theory in September which will be fun and planning to go to Poland next summer to do my final ratings and hopefully get in with a certain Irish carrier. If successful and I can stay fit that still leaves me with a potential 25 year career.

Like you I have never been a massive risk taker but I guess that has helped in a way to give me the money now to take this massive expensive risk!

I wish you all the luck in your endeavours.

Good luck mate - mate of mine in the RAF did this (techie by trade) and got up to his multi-engine course before he left. Dropped £20k to do the course full time at the start of 2020, so instantly found himself back on camp in a civvie job with Boeing…

It all worked out in the end and he got his first job with Loganair (had the accent to help) and has now moved up to Jet2.

I’m leaving the RAF at the end of this year but staying in the industry as a reservist - I don’t think I’ve got the balls to drop that much money training for a new job!

Good luck OP. I've switched into development which everyone knows is a dying trade but there are various reasons why it's not the worst decision for me in my area.

Being a bit of an AV nerd this would be a dream move.

Good luck, i hope you smash it!!

I wish you all the best. Changing careers can be daunting but it sounds also very exciting. I'll be 44 next month and i've done IT for the last 10 years (and 13 years before that in Mobile Telecomms repair) and i'm coming to a point where I want a change. The trouble i'm having is, what new career/skill to change too!
