Essential Steam Deck games...

I think it only recently got verified - it was previously only "playable" due to performance issues, so maybe they optimised it since you tried it? I haven't actually installed it yet though, so maybe it's still bad :(

Well I hope not for your sake and the good news is I tested this when OLED model was released so been lots of changes since!
Still uses a weirdly high amount of GPU though playing at 4k

Yeah apparently the streaming thing (was it sun and moon something?) works really well.

Yes, Sunshine as the server, Moonlight as the client, works great - I also use my deck docked to the TV as a "console" :)

You can also stream natively via Steam, but there's no HDR support, which somewhat defeats the purpose of getting the OLED deck in the first place!

I've had one of the OLEDs for just over a year.
Skyrim and Fallout 4 both play great, even with loads of mods.
Mass Effect - all singing and dancing edition, also great.
The first horizon zero dawn plays fab, no clue about expansions or the new one.
For something new, deep rock galactic sole survivor is also allot of fun.
I also found dragon age Inquisition runs fine but it requires some manual setup and tweaking to get the controller working.
As others have mentioned though unless your playing something old, low spec, with pixel graphics make sure your close to a power source.

I'd suggest giving the free to play Disney Speedstorm a try, if you like arcade racing games.

imo the steamdeck is (far) more capable than just that. I know it is almost universally hated but I finally started alien colonial marines on it after having since almost launch but not playing. now the launch disappointment has past it's not a bad game imo

Man I've got that sealed for the 360, never got around to it :o

added it to remind me as my son adored sonic racing transformed and its giving me those vibes. How does it play?

I've not played Sonic Transformed and it's been years since I last played Mario Kart, but Speedstorm is a fun casual racer.

Four fundamental classes, each of ~90 different Disney characters have unique power ups that open up at level 20, decent mix of ~20+ tracks.

If you use suggested level against AI races, usually a decent challenge, multiplayer can sometimes put you in impossible matchups. But races are typically under 3mins each.

Convoluted three virtual currency system, but you can progress without spending a real penny. I have ~20 racers at level 20+, one level 37.

Available on pc; ps5; Switch and Android at least. You can use code to use same account on each platform if you wish. Mobile version has optional simplistic controls, easier than touching various parts of screen, but less sense of achievement.

IMO it's worth a look, I play it for the racing, not the Disney characters.

Just wanted to say thanks for some cracking suggestions, some gems there I wouldn't have tried otherwise :D

As well as the 'indie' games Steam Deck also good for some PC ports from the 360/PS3 era like Arkham Asylum\City or Mass Effect. Anything more retro than that should be fine as well. :)

Baldur's gate 3 works great if you don't mind messing about with lossless scaling to get the framerate up at decent graphics settings.

Also, Dave the Diver.

Some of my favourites when I had my Steam Deck were,

Graveyard Keeper
Art of Rally
EmuDeck with thousands of roms :D

I picked a Deck up after my son was born. For me, being able to lock the Deck at any point & then resume the game later was the best bit. It meant any game was "baby compatible". I replayed a lot of Xbox 360 and Xbox One era titles.

Bioshock series
Tomb Raider (2013) series
Shadow of Mordor/War
Batman Arkham series
The Elder Scrolls
Fallout (up to & including 4/London)
The Witcher series
Red Dead Redemption 1&2
Halo: MCC
Assassin's Creed (up to Odyssey)
Half Life 2 & Black Mesa
Mass Effect series
Portal 1 & 2
The Outer Worlds
Forza Horizon 4 & 5

As a general rule of thumb, if it ran well on an OG Xbox One, it'll run well on Deck.

Aside from the above, I've got all of the usual Deck staples: Stardew Valley, Vampire Survivors, Balatro, Dave the Diver, Hades, Rimworld, Factorio, Hollow Knight, Celeste. It's a great bit of kit for these less demanding indie games.

I've largely shied away from more recent games on Deck as when I've tried them I've found they mostly don't run well. I did play through much of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 on Deck earlier in the year though. That ran surprisingly well.

Against the storm runs really well and it's a wonderful game. I've sunk best part of a thousand hours into it and don't actually play anything else on it. That and recently getting back into WoW (but on pc) are the only two things I do and they scratch my entire gaming itch.

Zombie Driver HD is on sale for buttons and is meant to run nicely on the deck, grabbed that will give it a whirl later.
