Right so my 2016 Madone is starting to show its age (no it's not I just want a new toy) and the 404 rim wheels have done some serious miles..

Now I'm getting the itch I'm torn between a new Madone or Canyon.. Bare in mind I'm the idiot that loves white bar tape and saddle

The two I'm kind of looking at are -

https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Trek/Madone-SLR-7-Ultegra-Di2-Gen-8-Road-Bike/1313J

https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/road-b.../4036.html?dwvar_4036_pv_rahmenfarbe=R107_P05

I'm not that bothered about power meters, Ill be putting Q rings on whatever I get next so I'll just stick one on then.

I'll probably end up getting some 404's and sell the wheels that come with ever I go for if I'm honest. I know Canyon do aeroads with Zipp but I think that's only with Sram group sets, I'd much rather stay Shimano.

I also have Maglia Roso round the corner from me which is a Trek outlet which is great for customer service, I've dealt with Trek customer service before and they were fanstastic.

I'm heavily leaning towards the Madone but the price of the Canyon makes me curious, I'd like to hear from owners regarding bike fit due to how they are made for out of the box type set up, I'd also like to know what their customer service is like please.

And I would love to hear from anyone that has made the move to or from a Madone/Aeroad..

I thought about doing this last year but I spent a week going through pro's and cons to the point I stressed myself out so much and just gave up
Madone from those 2.

Chain resized and fitted.
few laps of regents park tomorrow before work and will know if the clikety noise is gone and was old chains doing or... ihave another problem and spent money for nothing LOL

Any ideas what stops Apple Watch recording the route on a workout?

It’s got the speed, elevation etc and all that for the ride but the map is just a single spot where I started.

Happened yesterday too, but now that I look back the map for yesterday has magically appeared?

Not really too important but it’s nice to keep track.

210km or so this week, so I’ve not slacked off yet

And now it’s appeared with the map. Very strange that the map gets delayed by hours ..

@labby Given the intention to swap wheels/chainrings etc. Is it worth exploring one of the custom bike shops? I listen to Cade Media (although less so recently the podcast just seems the same every week other than the news) and the mechanic that's on works out of this place

Might make sense to chat to a similar local shop and spec something up. Especially considering the budget on that Madone

Really surprised myself in Oundle triathlon on the bike section. It's non drafting but managed to average 20mph, which is significantly faster than I've done before in training. One day I'll have to invest in a tri bike, as all of my races are likely to be non drafting, and the fastest are wearing velodrome type helmets and disk wheels etc.

had one of those moments of shame this morning :(
clipping in on lights...shoe slipped, centre of balance was up front over bars, wheel slipped on manhole cover...went sideways, so i flopped...
bars went 180degrees.. fell on drive side... chunk taken out from real deraileur, scratch on chainring, non drive side shifer badly scratched, tape cut almost to the bar... not to mention my pride lol...

Surely if you are going to spend that much money, you don't want to have to change the wheels?

The new Madone is also meant to be a bit of a dog, and riders can suffer from toe overlap. Out of interest, why do you want to get 404s? Zipp used to be seen as the premium wheel brand, but many other manufacturers have now caught up and even surpassed them now. I wouldn't be surprised if those Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 wheels that come with the Madone are not far off the Zipp performance levels. If I were going to spend 6-8k, I'd just lump it on a Specialized SL8, as it's (a) unanimously agreed to be a great all-round bike and (b) doesn't require any equipment changes other than tyres. Alternatively, if you are wedded to certain brand parts, perhaps just buy a frame you like and buy the parts separately? As I think you can get a full DA or Ultegra groupset for a decent price now (upgrade incoming).

Fallen back into my road cycling after a trip to Mallorca over the summer and renting a bike - recently got myself a rather tasty looking Pinarello X3 in matt black on the advice of a bike fit, slapped some carbon wheels on it and it's a delight now for a fairly reasonable price in the current market I reckon (sub-4k all in).

And then I went and injured myself so I'm confined to the turbo until I can commit to a proper ride out again without fear of a flare up. Typical...

I got a bike from them few years ago and they were good to deal with remotely

Custom Tommasini X Fire

Usual club social on Saturday, I'm going well still with some stronger efforts off the front on the way back working into headwinds doing 2up's with friends. Enjoying this year, but jumped back onto Zwift last night for a community race as need to get back into it (have only TTT'd and group ridden the last couple of months). Brutal. Small numbers and came away with a 3rd place so happy with that. Could have saved it and sat in with a chance at 2nd but guy was stronger so fairly sure would have beaten me in the sprint. I put the last of my efforts into chasing the solo guy up front who'd stayed away most the race - after some earlier efforts without anyone else being interested to work with me. Trimmed 7-8s off the lead, then my compatriot launched and closed another 12s getting within 5s but he couldn't finish it. Ah well!

I'd say Madone, you obviously love them and happy paying the price premium (why you're looking at Ultegra and not 105) so pointless to 'save some money' by going Canyon - I'm really no fan of them and really only advise people to get them if they're trying to maximise their budget. Your budget is high enough not to need to do that...

Worth reading up the comments and such about the Madone Gen8 - seems silly to get 'old gen' at this point, especially as we're nearing the autumn and the next gen of Madone (?) might be out shortly - could be more deals to come on the Gen8 worth looking out for. The Aeolus Pro 51 Wheels on there are not bad wheels and not something you'd instantly need to change anyway (saying that as even a Zipp fanboy myself). Obviously if the only real differences are weight it won't make much difference to you looking at your rides mostly being rolling/flat... The 'toe overlap' sounds like a sizing issue, don't know what frame size you are and body/leg/foot size you are with your fit to know how much of an issue it would be.

My 2016 Diverge is pretty beaten up and used as a winter+commuter these days. I have a minor toe overlap with it, never realistically caused me an issue. 35,000km. Just put Zipp 303 S and Conti GP5000STR in 30mm on there actually. Like them so far, feel pretty quick and not 'boaty' - much better than the tough 32mm Roubaix Pro I'd tried (must be lighter). That 'squeaky' feeling and noises of fresh rubber on slightly moist tarmac as we had some drizzle this morning :D

I totally agree, really once getting into the realms of that kinda thing (custom/bespoke build) would say look locally. There will always be tweaks and nothing really comes close to discussing things face to face. Labby is in Suffolk and that place is in Newcastle. Tricky to drop around to get something checked out! ;)

Support your LBS - quite often that means building a relationship with them. Build your trust - but also likely that means riding one of the brands they're partner with and 'like' to work on. So choose your shop depending on your needs - location, access, availability or even brands they carry. You'll have less issues - like a car dealership working on their own brands - they can service any car, just more efficient and better at servicing the ones they do day in and out doing a better job of it.

Possible post-processing as the Watch itself doesn't store maps? So has to sync/process from a cloud upload to populate the map data into the activity? Guessing, I'm no Apple or Watch user. Sounds like an Apple issue. Use a head unit if you want real live map data from GPS.

Your image doesn't work 'imgbb.com upgrade to a Pro account to embed images in emails'.

I use imgur upload as it's free - https://imgur.com/upload - browse/drop an image in. Click the dots, then share links and choose the 'BBCode' click to 'Copy Link' green button and paste that in.

Ouch! Hope the injuries nothing more than a bit of a bang. The poor shifter+drivechain! Thankfully fairly minor and some 'war wounds' nearly all of them pick up. Just hope the RD isn't too bad and just cosmetic as probably the most expensive bit!

Good to hear you've got back into it. Depending on the spec you don't get much with the X3 but guess providing it got you back out riding then it was well worth it! Just keep going, injuries heal, just take time. Hopefully enough of the summer left for it!

Certainly not some mega spec but it has a frame that suits me, decent tyre clearance, 105 Di2 and now has carbon wheels and top tier tyres. Bonus points being the shop swapped out components for me to get the right fit at no charge (cranks, bars and stem).

Honestly though, I've always loved the Pinarello design and never saw myself owning one, so having one sat in the office thats 1/3rd the price of a Dogma with a very similar aesthetic makes me happy, and the frame flexibility plus 32mm tyres and carbon wheels makes it a pretty plush ride

sorry guys wasn't posting then ignoring.. I'm in the middle of moving and have the solicitors from hell. I'll have a proper read and reply when I get the chance.

Goodluck! Far higher priority but also far more stressful! A treat once you've solved all that. Some extra reward to look forward to?!

Hopefully this works now, not sure why it thought I had linked directly as I've just done it the same way I've shared images on here before!

I need to get more competent at swimming and running which lets me down a bit. My mate did a 4 minute shower ride and still beat me by 29 seconds!

Would love to keep up the biking improvement too, maybe some sort of indoor trainer for winter to come back strong next year.

Did 2 Zwift TTT's again last night, going well. Really enjoyed the slightly cooler evening garage temps so pretty chuffed to test myself - shorter but technical course. Actually suited me better than the longer flat one, which hurt far more!

Forgot to ask - which chain is that and where from?! Blingy! Tempted...

Yup perfect now, well done!

Great efforts and riding too, but not too much Triantilope speak in here please ;)

Halfords and they have good prices for those
had gold chain before - matching gold bike logos.

next time will be normal dura ace chain

Why is it, after a week of less cycling, it always feels so much harder?

Good deed done for the day, saw an old man cycling into a park and offered to pump up his front tyre, he was almost cycling on the rim! Took a while with my little pump and his larger touring tyres though!

Why is it, after a week of less cycling, it always feels so much harder?

Haha yeah it does, certainly in my case when I have a 'low week' for riding I build a different type of fatigue, using less trained muscles so they ache. So even when going back on the bike feel sluggish and slow rather than refreshed! But that is probably it for me - the only times I don't 'plan' to ride will be for other reasons, sometime time related but usually as we're doing something else instead. Like snowboarding and then 3 hours handling/stacking firewood last weekend, my legs only just feeling back to normal from it by this weekend and certainly not good! Took me a couple of hours until I was going well.

But a good weekend here, not as much riding as I'd like considering it likely the last 'summer' fantastic weather weekend alongside bank holiday. Just the usual saturday club social but a couple of roads I hadn't ridden before - some of them even with fresh surfaces! :o Had a good 'paceline' of 5 of us on the run back in (from the 13 riders along) only really 2 of us pulling turns and we gapped the other 3 on the last drag. Felt good!

That's a good price?! Ouch. Rethinking. But I guess 12s is more expensive than 11s anyway due to #reasons hmmmmm

One of the reasons I justified this boring black bike was to do things like this! ;)

Got myself out on a ride for the first time since the lower back injury yesterday and it felt lovely. 36km after work in the evening sun, relatively quiet roads. Certainly didn't set any records nor did I plan to but fairly happy averaging 25kph for my first ride back. Had a bike fit just before the injury too so part of it is still getting used to that. New saddle, new shoes, saddle was moved forward and up and bars were dropped so very different.
