The press pack think there will be serious discussions with Amorim over the international break. He seems unsure of himself, I think he either changes his formation or he goes. He’s way too stubborn and it’s just damaging everything now.

Some suggestions he could resign but I wouldn’t expect that.

Actually don't know what to think anymore...Lost

United can't keep going like this - hiring and firing.... Who's next etc?

He's not going to change from his beliefs/formation - he's played nothing else his whole coaching career. But I do agree the "system" is far too rigid - literally no one takes a player on, crosses a ball, plays a through ball etc. It's insane to me that you've got a 6ft5" forward and aside from corners last night - there was barely a cross into the box from open play.

Actually completely lost - no idea if I want Amorim to continue or not.....

My take is, he realises he needs to go as his system won't work. Also, whats happened to the Man Utd thread?

That was my take on the interview. I think he realised he isnt able to change the way the team plays with any consistency and was questioning his position. My fear is that his rigid adherance to his system means virtually every team knows how to play against him, so much so a league two team has found him out

Anyone blaming the system is ridiculous. A PL team should be able to beat a League 2 team with any system. The players were simply not good enough. A system doesn't lead to two players running into each other and tackling each other, it doesn't lead to players not able to complete simple passes or kicking the ball out of play. It doesn't lead to a keeper not able to make multiple simple saves.

He can't make this formation work and this is his formation. He doesn't have another one. If he can't make this one work then thats it.

Thats exactly what we have to do. We are changing the way we work above the manager and like all the top teams, the manager is a replaceable asset like any player.

People take players on but the formation is junk and doesn't work against teams that have figured it out and have a high work rate and any semblance of quality. Lets not get carried away after last night. Onana gifted them both goals arguably. Grimsby were decent enough but the fact we were found out by league 2 opposition is absurd.

He has to go. There is no point hoping that he magically turns this around. I thought he could do enough this season with the tools he has now but its clear he can't. He will win some games against the bigger teams because they won't be pragmatic and they will play their own game. Against the rank and file though he is going to be found out time and time again. 5 at the back doesn't work in the PL these days unless is a very flexible system with the right players and where you adapt that formation to the opposition. He doesn't do that.

Last night we had 5 players against 2 a number of times but those 5 players were in the wrong places and might as well not have been on the pitch for all the good they did.

No, thats on the players. The loss to Grimsby isn't the issue in of itself. The issue is that we were outplayed for large parts of the game and the system, yes the system is so easy to play against and doesn't give us any benefits. The 5 at the back doesn't give us any benefits going forwards or backwards.

People pointing to the system are also taking into consideration that it's not worked in many matches to date, apart from in Europe.

I’m not too sure about that. You can see the players have been drilled in this system and it hampers their decision making. They look unsure all the time.

You can’t just blame Onana, we know he’s poor but Grimsby could have quite easily scored 5. Their 3rd goal should have stood too.

He’s been given an extraordinary benefit of the doubt considering how bad things have been since he took over.

If we just focus on results and performances, it’s just awful. We’re all sat here thinking he seems a good guy and with time to train things will get better, but I think we’ve all been fooled…

A good coach can make our squad into an effective team. He’s a weak coach and a weak person based on his behaviour during the penalty shootout.

So sitting here right now - what's the play?

Sack him? Keep him?

Give him the Burnley game and then take stock of everything over the international break.

It’s early in the season but blindly sticking with him isn’t going to necessarily fix anything, he might have had enough…

I think this is the thing. Even pre season wasn't very encouraging. Think we all had hope that the new signings were going to suddenly elevate us but it just looks pretty much the same as last season. A striker with nothing played into him and looking isolated and relying on the odd player to come up with something special.

We might as well have just stuck with Hojlund and Garnacho and saved £200m

Must admit I think I had rose tinted on as like Amorim

But last light the specs came off!

However, coupled to this the keeper has got to go...

Hes a good bloke and he has brought back some of the mentality we need insofar as any player who steps out of line is gone. Thats how it should be at United.

The issue is that we are still waiting for something to change on the pitch and its simply not. I thought we would have a season of ups and downs this year but I simply think we have to accept that its going to be largely downs. Teams know how to play against us so even when we know what we should be doing, its just not that easy. 5 at the back against Grimsby for christs sake. 5 at the back when we need 3 goals. 5 at the back when we aren't controlling the midfield or getting forward. Its madness.

I had high hopes that it was temporary pain for long term gain but I think we would be utterly mad to stick with him at this point. Perhaps with just the right players in the right positions he would be able to get something with this formation but we are talking £2-300m and players that we simply can't get.

We have a good set of players here. Yes we still need to improve the CM position, the GK but outside of that, with a regular coach we would be pushing top 6 easily with this lot.

Sack him.

Ange started off well at Spurs too so it is too early to tell. Everyone was creaming over his high line but teams adapted. Frank basically has a free card at the moment until teams start to suss him out.
Maybe so, it is a long season.

Mind you both Utd and Spurs had shocker league performances last season and Spurs look better already.

Hell, they even did so well at City's home the Silvinho transfer appears off now

The question I think is going to be, is Amorin willing to adapt to the Premier League, or is he going to retreat to a European league where he can keep playing his structure against easier opposition.

I hope he decides to learn and adapt and stay, there's a good manager in him, but the stubborn-ness is letting him down. You can see the players getting frustrated that it's not working.

Might it work with another transfer window, a new keeper and midfield? Not impossible, but we can't keep losing games. End of.

The job of a manager is to win football matches, not implement a system.

Yup, adapt or die (obviously not literally).

Yeah - I don't know myself. Sack him and who's next?

But it can't continue - I feel most sorry for Hjoland - Had almost no service whatsoever - been made out to be a poor player, and likely moved on. He's 22 years old and should be prime for development into a proper centre forward - there appears to be nothing there to assist or help him from the coaching / manager etc - He's been completely starved of support on the pitch.

On the fence with Amorin at the moment - Need to see a quick and sustained improvement in performances and come actual creative chances/play or he's gone.

He needs to be flexible and appears to not have that in him at all. Likely could be his death sentence as a manager.

Rasmus is too weak and not sharp enough

I thought Sesko had a decent game in the circumstances. He had some good touches, and if I'm remembering correctly, every chance he got he either won a header but missed, or put a shot on target.

Hojlund gets physically bullied, is crap in the air, and usually doesn't test the keeper. Sesko is an upgrade.

I would really like to see Zirkzee and Cunha playing together though, Zirkzee is so good at holding up the ball and putting in cute little passes that Cunha can run onto.
