Is this the unraveling of CyclingMikey?

Cycling mikey could have caught the escooter user who whizz past me on my road bike this morning, to clarify, i was doing around 25-29km/h on my road bike

this thing i swear to god whizz past me double the speed almost

How exactly would you suggest he 'catch' something like this?

- A massive barrier to people getting on their bikes more is the **** behaviour of drivers around cyclists. We are an overweight population and we are trying to reduce our carbon input into the environment so putting of a large chunk of people isn't a good thing. My partner won't cycle anywhere near roads. 95% of that is because of **** drivers scaring the crap out of her.

She's got a point, I used to cycle everywhere, school -> college -> work, but there's absolutely no way I'd do so now unless the vast majority of it was off road. People's driving round here is scary enough when you're in a car!

The “no such thing as road tax” argument is usually used as a foil to the “you don’t pay road tax” argument that gets directed at cyclists.

Unless you're a cyclist you have zero idea how many times this can be said on the roads, even sitting down for a meal with family or a casual conversation at work and it gets tiresome.

I see my Bro In Law every week and we go on at least 4 holidays a year, he 100% knows that there is no such thing as Road Tax, he's read the literature and he knows what vehicle tax is for and where it's spent.
It still didn't stop him last week from arguing with a friend who cycles for a Club while we were in an Indian restaurant and coming out with "You don't pay Road Tax" :)
It's as though these idiots have tourettes and no matter what Winston Churchill said it doesn't matter, they will find a way to still call it road tax even though it isn't :)

As regards whether it’s based on emissions or what, the issue is the amount of wear that cars cause to the roads.

That is simply just a 'moving the goalposts' argument. The previous emissions argument is no longer valid so the focus has to be shifted.

Additionally, the only roads that are maintained directly out of central government funding are motorways, which cyclists can’t use anyway. Surface roads are maintained by councils out of council tax and out of their allocations from the central government. Given that cyclists pay council tax, they are paying for the upkeep of the roads that they can use in any case.

I don't know why you are laughing.
The roads are mainly paid out of Council Tax and everybody I know on a bike who uses them has got a job (as well as a car).
However since they are Public Highways even that old age pensioner without transport buying a loaf of bread is paying for the upkeep of the roads with the tax on her loaf.
Everybody contributes a form of tax that can go towards the upkeep of the roads by just buying necessities.
Your imaginary road tax goes into a central fund like the tax on a loaf of bread and some of it may go towards councils who then might spend it on the roads.

However, I know I'm talking to a brick wall.

What have the actions of criminals riding street-illegal off-road ebikes on public roads got to do with cyclists?

What have cyclists got to do with cyclists? ;)

Maybe I painted a picture of the Sur-ron riding gangstas but I mean actual pedal e-bikes. Yes they are ridden at over 30mph through London. OK so they aren't pedalling at that speed, but they have pedals. They are trigger activated illegal machines. They're still cyclists by definition of having pedals no? What else would you call them? OK don't answer that lol. I mean genuinely...they're cyclists no? These tend to be the food courier ones trying to make 10 stops in 10 minutes to make the monies.

The charging methods have changed. It used to be based on engine size. Whatever the method used, the end result is the same. More damaging vehicles pay more.
A solid rebuttal.

Semantics. If they’re not turning the pedals at any point, are they really cycling.

I’ve seen people riding e-bikes that literally don’t have a chain. Come on, who are you fooling.

lol
I swear some of them have bolt on pedals that don't even spin.

I go on a lot of breaks around the country and when walking through a city me and the wife play 'Legal or Illegal' to pass a bit of time.
I even had my Road Tax Brother in Law playing it two weeks ago in Newcastle/Durham.
Like both of you say no chain and bolt on pedals on some :)
Also not pedaling while using a throttle although I will admit I use a throttle just to move off that I will argue on 'Grandaddy Laws' since I've had it since 2010.

South Africa was colonised for a time by the Dutch and Afrikaans evolved out of Dutch languages, so it figured they might sound similar.
I had a Dutch chap tell me to think of Afrikaans as “angry, drunk Dutch”.

Same difference between French and Québécois, though the French aren’t as charitable.

I was susprised to hear he was dutch,

From his accent he sounds south African

He's dutch but grew up in Zimbabwe which I think is where his dad died in a road traffic accident.

Say what you like about him, he's got you lot talking about road safety, road taxes and everything in between ;)

Road safety ? :p

you got more chance of being stabbed in london than dying from someone using their phone doing 0 mph

Actually london is not bad, its safe
