Looking to build a PC for a friend. He is keen to move to Linux

Budget: GBP 2000

Requirements: ubuntu / debian
Monitor: 5k
keyboard and mouse: wireless
CPU: AMD
Mobo: with wifi, no advanced features needed apart from onboard GPU able to run the 5k monitor
RAM: 64 GB
SSD: 2 TB
Case, power and cooling: silent as it will be under a desk height-adjustable model, 120x70cm
Cooling: either Noctua or AIO for the CPU.

GPU: not necessary now, can be bought later as he wants to work on AI maybe next year - I am thinking RTX5070 perhaps

Ideas?

I think he wants 27". Not clear why 4k is not enough - I think he is just coming from Apple and thinking this way it is future proof. I rather he bought a good panel 4k than 5k so-so. He will not do any photoediting or anything like that...
Who is best served by a 5k monitor? I don't even know :D

One thing on the 5k monitor: we will need DP with 5k@60Hz
Can a B650 drive that although it is only saying 4k@60Hz ?
The integrated graphics in normal (non-G) 7000/9000 CPUs uses RDNA2. Anandtech used to have slides on the IGP's capabilities, which unfortunately can't be found now, but the DP is usually more capable than the HDMI port and I don't think the Tomahawk is any different.

ok, I guess I have to build the PC and test it. Worst case, I will look for a cheap GPU that can support the 5k. I cannot find any information that says that DP 1.4 will be able to run 5k at 60Hz

What's the use case for this PC, other than 'work on AI next year' ?

Not sure I understand the 5k monitor requirement.

Not sure what the acual specifications are these days, but I was under the impression that HDMI 2.1 is capable of 8k at 60hz with an HDMI 2.1 certified cable.

Some Z890 motherboards have a DP 2.1 port, most of the AM5 motherboards I have seen offer HDMI 2.1.

The Asus Pro Art 5k display has USB C, HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4 inputs.

Not sure if the below would do, would only need a decent 550w-650w PSU and ATX mid tower case. If it's under a desk avoid glass panels.
The motherboard has HDMI 2.1 and DP1.4 outputs. You say he is not doing any photo work or anything like that, so I can't see why he is needing 64gb of memory, you could drop that to 32gb and save a lot.
My go to coolers are usually Noctua, but the BeQuiet one I mentioned is actualy pretty decent, quiet and easy to fit, currently running one on a 7600x inside an NZXT H500 case.
The BeQuiet cases usually quiet, solid side panel, dust filter, front intake. So good for under a desk, no need for a modular PSU, just a solid gold unit. Of course there are others, silent solid panels.

I didn't see any 5k monitors on Overclockers, so as far as I am aware, the Asus Pro Art mentioned at £750 is probably the one to go for.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £791.90 (includes delivery: £0.00)

friend tested and looked at 4k alternatives and the 5k at 27" is way better spec ie sharper on text.
usage: linux/programming so text clarity is key. He is a user of macbooks with retina display and wants the same type of quality display.

meanwhile, we also looked at SFF as he quite likes that idea, so looking at alternatives to that too :D

indeed, confusing on this monitors front with the ports and what they actually support. he has just ordered the monitor.
We are trying to find out ways to test it without having the PC yet, maybe with mine.

A sff build with a 12 core 9900x to give you an idea of cost but noise is a one of contention therefore matx is the compromise.

Let's address these as the ASUS 5k arrived, it has good clarity on text how he wanted, however - the brightness is very far away from what the macbook can do. If it doesn't work out he will return the monitor ... :D

So, what would be a good option in this price range of about GPB700 for maybe a 4k monitor at 27", perhaps also a better refresh but with the best nits and brightness?
his office is in a very bright room!

update:
it was the HDR mode that limited the brightness, so with that turned off ...works as expected :D nice.

we use dell ultrasharp monitors at work. I like them...they do a 5k 40" also...once you go bigger, had to go back..driving 2 43" on desk at mo

thanks so much all! very good guidance as always.
We've come to this final decision based on where we are based for availability (Switzerland). Now checking with the SFF community for compatibility

AMD AMD CPU Ryzen 9 9900X
Mobo MSI Mortar WIFI
64 GB RAM G.Skill DIMM 64 GB DDR5-6000 (2x 32 GB) Dual-Kit
SSD M2 2 TB WD Black SN850X 2 TB
Power Supply Lian Li EDGE EG0850 850W Black, PC-Netzteil
CPU Air Cooler Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 Core II

Keyboard / Mouse Various
Case Fractal Design Terra
Monitor ASUS ProArt PA27JCV
Monitor arm

I need to start to educate myself better about the options available and compatibility ...
For SFF, I think I need to do a lot more to check compatibility and good cooling. Components stay, I need to rethink Power supply and case/AIO.

The case and PSU from my build will work with the other parts you've chosen

how small a case do you need?
