Are you sure the volume isn't muted? If the volume is 0 then it won't chime. So this afternoon, all of a sudden my Mac mini M4 no longer makes the startup chime when I switch it on. Its enabled in the sound options and I tried the sudo nvram startup-mute=%00 command from terminal but still no sound.
Haha, great mindsAre you sure the volume isn't muted? If the volume is 0 then it won't chime.
That was it thanks mate. What I didn't tell you was that I changed my sound settings to make my Bluetooth speakers the default sound source instead of the built in speaker. This meant it no longer chimed at start up. Set it back the way it was and it chimes again.I'm pretty sure this is relating to the onboard audio source, either being muted the last time it was used, or in general being set to another device, i.e. a DAC or BT earbuds etc?
At least, this used to be why it didn't work years ago - with a macbook, you could simply mute the onboard speaker audio, and it would never chime again. So it maybe something as simple as it's decided to default to your external DAC/BT source versus the onboard?
Ah that's great news mate! Glad that I could helpThat was it thanks mate. Think I’ll do the same, was just worried it was some kind of hardware fault.First thing I did when they added the option to turn off the chime, was to turn off the chime.
