BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Absolutely, sadly as I have both VM and Openreach available, CityFibre aren't interested. Wouldn't be so bad if VM was on their new network here. I regularly have to move large files to the cloud and 100 Mbps upload is... frustrating!

I bet it is frustrating! While I don't think that symmetric connections are required everywhere, having the upload as low as that is just rubbish. So many people these days rely on cloud services. Even if it was 1600/500 that would be ample enough.

Sigh… I’m so glad I chose a 900mbps option with BT … my speed is so fast now …

The phone gets 3mbps over WiFi, and the Mac Studio gets 1mbps … yes, one!

It feels like every single step of getting fibre ( ordered in May ) has been something that has needed me to chase up and fix . Easily the worst upgrade process of broadband I’ve ever gone through.

Yet another amount of time on the phone to BT tomorrow then.

What do you think is wrong? Just a setting somewhere or something at their end.
My phone connects to my router at about 880Mbps, 5 Ghz(80mhz).

Engineer coming Monday.

I know my home Ethernet network works fine at gigabit all round the house, the smarthub is connecting to the ont at gigabit according to the home hub . I’ve reset both multiple times.

I’ve also connected the laptop directly into the ONT with an Ethernet cable and used a DSL/PppoE connection … got a rock solid 1mbps Speedtest …

The think it’s their end somewhere.

And to answer your question a bit better, I think it’s a setting … it consistently settled down to 10mbps exactly for the first day, and now exactly 1.0mbps, which to me suggests that somewhere it’s a setting. I wonder if someone has typed in 10 first then changed it to 1 thinking giga bps rather than mega bps.

If it works via cable and not wifi, it’s definitely your end. Even basic ISP routers are capable of more than you are getting over WiFi.

I’m not sure how’s it’s my end … WiFi, Ethernet via the hub and Ethernet directly from laptop into the ONT all report 1mbps download.

which suggests the Ont is being fed by that slow speed from further up the connection.

Hmm ... interesting. Sorry for the image sizes. This is from Speedtest on the Mac wired ethernet to hub.

this is speedtest on my iPhone through wifi:

but when I use the BT App on my phone ...

Just to feedback on mine ... turned out to be the router weirdly enough. New router from the engineer. Instant fix. Can't explain why I got the poor speeds from the ONT directly ... maybe my laptop was messing up from swapping around all the various network connections, who knows. But now upto full speed.

Vodafone are doing 910mb for £33 seems a great deal. They any good.
Poor customer service, good luck getting log in credentials if you use your own router, and there’s been reports of congestion/routing issues. But if the connection works fine they’re like the vast majority of ISPs.

Was just about to ask was there an openreach price crash/reduction as I’m now paying 32quid for 900mb. I was paying 49.50 for 500mb.

Had zero problems getting my username off them. Messaged them and they popped it right over. (Was 2 years ago mind).

Like you said I’ve had no need to go near them to test their customer service

Plusnet still seem like the best of the cheaper options then, I know there support has declined since BT bought them.

It does seem like 900mb is now around £35-40 on Openreach.
I wish Aquiss was more competitive especially for year 2 onwards.

I always liked PlusNet, plus decent support still to be fair.

FTTP finally hit the poles on the street outside.

Seems like 500/65-80 seems the best value. My thinking is that I have some older Unifi AC Pro across the house and the PHY speeds to the APs is 600-800Mbps.

So from my readings, divide that PHY by 3 to get theoretical max speeds for download/upload, giving 200-250Mbps across the house. Why get a 900/85-100 package when the APs won't even give us access to the extra download speed? Even upgrading to the U6 or U7 might not even max out a 900 connection and would cost me like £600 for the new APs.
