Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Wrapped this up at the weekend, with 38 hours on the clock. I wasn't particularly completionist, though I did finish up the relationship quests for each character and beat one optional boss (
Sprong
).

Overall, it's really good. Hard to say if it'll be my game of the year, is the year is yet young, but for now, it's the game to beat. I doubt anything will beat its soundtrack. And the length is good. JRPGs got by just fine from the NES era through to the PS2 with a standard run-time of "40 hours, give or take a couple" and it's gratifying to see that can still work just fine.

Yeah. I think 40-50 hours is the sweet spot for me. Unless I absolutely love the game and the side quests are top notch, I don't like it when games go to 80 hours or more.

Like say the remake Final Fantasy games. Really wished they just made it like the old games. They decided to milk it instead and now there is a lot of filler that drags the games down. Love the graphics and sound. But the rest could be so much better.

Alas, aint no way I'm doing NG+ on a game like this.
It also requires doing something on more than one run and the unlocked weapon is sort of underwhelming. I think it's mostly a novelty item for people who replay stuff obsessively.
I might do NG+ if I run out of other stuff to play but won't be for a good while.

I have put in 3-4 hours and really enjoying it. Pulling me in to play more.

I hope devs can see that there is demand for more turn based games.

This is how Final Fantasy 7 Remake should have been like.

Director announced plans for more as Clair Obscur is a franchise

Whilst excited also very worried, expedition 33 was 10/10 for me I don’t want a sequel that isn’t needed and done just cause this was a huge hit

I'd hope they move away from the families and situations we saw in obs 33 as I feel their story is done. But the world building they did was exceptional and has lots of scope for new stories.

Maybe a prequel for one of the previous expeditions but I can't see how it would play any different really, might be too samey.

Along with the lore they've already established I think they already have an arc planned to continue the story, as others have said there's a number of directions they could follow. (minor spoiler) They could expand upon
Clea
or expand on the
Writers
, whatever direction they choose I hope it's just as good as Exp33 but it will be a good many years before we hear about the next chapter.

In some way I hope they leave it be. Some of the best stories know when to end, and not string every thread out. Obs33 is pretty perfect as is, and I fear tinkering with it will ruin it

@nsmalley I think with the bigger studios that's definitely a worry, so many good IP's ruined because they decide to cash in. But there are some studio's such as CD Projekt Red where I have a little more faith in them looking after their IP's such as Cyberpunk and Witcher. I feel that when Sandfall begins developing a follow up to Exp33, it will be just as much a labour of love as Exp33 was. I have faith they'll get it right. I just hope they resist the temptation to change too much from the original game.

Heard so many good things about this game, I've finally caved and downloading it. If I don't like it I'm blaming the entire gaming industry and its community.
Same, mainly based on this thread. Just loaded it for now but we'll see how I get on with the combat!

Is controller really better than KBM? I'll start on one but not sure apart from the ingame info that says it's better with one.

Finally got some gaming time this week. Bought this game and I'm really enjoying it, only just hit the world map.

What settings are people running on their 4090s? For me I'm using default maxed out settings and in some areas it can go 40s to 50s. If I switch on frame gen x2 it doubles to 80+

It's a single player game don't worry about getting high frames.

Very, very tempted by this - How are people finding it on Steam Deck?
I've been playing it on GeForce now on an old laptop (the £9.99 per month, 60fps subscription) and it runs really well. Could always try that as I know it's a very demanding game.
