Travelling in London across 2 days. Zone 1-4.. Travel card or PAYG?

Haven't been to London in years.
But I have a concert to go to and was wondering what best option is for 3 distinct journeys across 2 days zone 1-4.

Is it just use a credit card or something?

Honestly it's been years and I don't want to assume.
 
Honestly, just use contactless to tap in, tap out


Tip: if you use contactless, you can tap in and tap out as many times as you want, i think the cap will be about £12, so if your making lots and lots of journies through vaious stations within the day, you get capped at around £12

good if you want to use as many trips on the tube in 1 day as you wont go over the cap


I never get a travel card, i always use debit card contactless to tap in/tap out. Travel cards work out more expensive. Its a tourist trap to make money

Where is the concert ? is it in zone 1 or 2 ? or is the conert in 4? (somewhere like wembley park?) i assume its central ? and your driving or something to zone 4 and getting a train in to the city ?

Staying in zone 4 overnight and concert is in o2.
Bus is to London Victoria

Not sure if anyone will come along and comment, but generally I always find them more expensive, using your debit card to tap in/out is far easier and cheaper than travel cards/oyster cards etc

This. Just use contactless and it'll automatically cap at whatever rate you'd pay the most for.

Just don't confuse your cards and use different ones, especially when tapping in and out on the same journey. Only an absolute moron would do something so stupid :o

I think i saw a travel card for 17 for 2 days. Sounds like it we only plan to make 3 journeys it'll be cheaper to just tap.

Saves some faff too

If its 3 journies then yes cheaper to just tap

Although when your in london you do get the tendancy to make more journeys :)


For some reason i love using the tube to take random journeys.

Admittedly I've had a couple times where I've forgotten to tap in, most recently at Finsbury Park when I was in a rush and changing from a National Rail train there down to the Underground made me forget (no gates). I was charged the maximum fare for that, but you should get automatically refunded within a couple days anyway, or can be claimed online.

Didn't touch in or out

How to get a refund if you didn't touch in or out on a TfL card reader and were charged a maximum fare.

Clearly shows how often I go to London :cry:

So you have to tap in and out? Is it clear to tap out?

This is sounding like a low budget pron movie.

I always pay the fares,


Although one instance where i didn't buy the right ticket (happened in Copenhagen) using their metro, i didn't buy the right ticket , needless to say i got asked for my ticket on the metro train by one of the checking staff people, they seen i didnt have the correct ticket (my mistake) and i ended up getting an on the spot £85 fine.

Needless to say that's the only ever time i have made a mistake with any sort of public transport ticket. (honest mistake, i bought a zone 1 ticket only rather than a zone 1-2 ticket I think it was .

Yes in london, just tap in your entering station at the gate, tap out of the exit station gate

If your going through one tube station to the next (IE connecting station) you enter in to station 1 get off at the next station and travel through an interconnecting tube to station 2 without coming out the gate, go on the next train, then get off at station 3, and tap out at the exit gate, it will auto calculate your journey

Just tap with a debit card - I thought it automatically works out if it's cheaper to get a travel card and charges you the lowest afterwards. Maybe London native can confirm???

Most stations you have to tap to get through the barriers, certainly in the zones you’ve said you’ll be in. It’s only out in the sticks where they have stations without barriers where you might feasibly forget and just wander off.

Yes there is a cap applied to contactless which means you'll never pay more than a daily travelcard

It's 2025 man, just wave your phone at the barriers, job done :P

On buses you only need to tap on, as the fare is fixed. On tube/overground you need to tap on and off, most of the time you won't be able to avoid doing this as there's barriers. That's all there is to it.
