New pc no power

Hi I’ve built a new pc and 1st power up and it’s completely dead, not even a led or a fan twitch. All connectors look well seated I was super careful when assembling so I can’t see it being shorted or anything like that.
Memory in 2&4 as per mobile manual
2x8 pin cpu connectors plugged in.

So stressed! Help..
 
Can you show us some pics of the insides.

Normally if the build is completely dead, you either got the power button not connected right on the front panel pins, or the power connectors (main 24 pin and CPU 4/8) not connected to the board or PSU properly.

Don't forget PSUs have their own power switch on the back.

I don’t believe it! I had an old 550w psu and plugged that into the mobo. There is power with the old psu but that one only has a 4 pin cpu connectors plugged so I can’t use it. So it looks like a faulty psu. Unless anyone else has any suggestions. Don’t they test these things on the production line? So frustrating!

You do have both connectors for the 24 pin plugged into the PSU?

You only need 1 x 8 pin CPU cable. You haven't used a PCI-E cable by mistake?

Try the power lead from the old PSU with the new one.
 
Ok so I look really stupid. Yes this has another plug next to the long one on the psu which I hadn’t plugged in. BUT Next problem.!!

I get “Input not supported” on monitor when I boot up. However if I move hdmi cable to another monitor I can see bios when I boot(del key). I can navigate bios then save and restart but message then appears on this monitor. Etc etc… I changed boot priority to CSM in bios but that doesn’t work and it also advises in bios not to do that when using the onboard hdmi connector (which I am).

Also does it matter which m.2 slot I use? I put my 2TB m.2 in a slot but it doesn’t seem to show it in advanced bios anywhere in the boot section.
Only things in BOOT are:-
CSM
Launch PXE OpROM Policy
Setup Prompt Timeout
Bop Num-Lock
Full Screen Logo
Fast boot.

Now I think I need installation media in a drive attached. In the process of creating installation media.
Maybe if I can boot from media it will allow me to select the nvme as primary drive.

Most annoying thing is the monitor thing, very annoying.

Seems I’m kinda working this out myself with a considerable amount of stress. Now installing windows 11. Monitor is stopping on thankfully.

Ok all sorted now, glad I don’t do this very often. So stressful. I suppose you get used to it but when it’s the first one you’ve done in 20 years it’s tricky. Things have changed quite a bit in that time.

Just got to get myself a second hand Graphics card now, looking at an RTX 2060 or 2080.

Also got to figure out what I need to buy so I can carry on using my old Creative Inspire 7.1 surround sysytem. I did use the Creative audigy card with loads of jacks but new pc only has the usual.

It depends on the motherboard, you're normally best off using the primary slot under the CPU, but the performance difference is small in most cases. Note that for some motherboards using certain M.2 slots will take lanes from the graphics card.

You don't want to be using CSM with a new build.

How did you fix it? For future reference if someone else has similar problems.

Is it PCI or PCI-E?

USB soundcards are pretty common now, though you can still buy PCI-E cards. Keep in mind that a graphics card will block a lot of your slots and some PCIE slots may share with M.2 slots, so choose carefully.
