Moving into the middle of nowhere (England or Wales)?

does sound appealing ,i have a few other houses on my hill but its basically traffic free ,i was sat out watching the bats last night and you can just hear the river ,on my regular walks i just don't see people ,the highland cattle roam the village as do the wild horses , so i would love to be totally isolated as well but this feels pretty near ,if it is a downside we have 1 pub and one shop, both over 1.5 miles from me
I can walk to Rough tor off road from here (6mls) without meeting anyone, it's awesome

I live in Herefordshire. There is NO motorway here, it takes basically an hour before I get onto the motorway to either Cardiff, Birmingham or towards London.

I do have fibre though, even in some small villages you can get like it through BT. But do remember that the trains to London will take 3hours and cost you like £80, the roads are not the best but they make Strongbow and a lot of the Cider here.

The roads up to hereford are not bad tbh, although as you say will take around 45 mins to get to a major motorway link.

I guess if your after the quiet life. One thing that would worry me though is commuting to places, and work if i lived in the middle of nowhere, I would also feel alone.

Despite the hysteria from the populists, the UK is mostly empty and there is basically an unlimited set of options open to you, assuming by 'food delivered' you mean a supermarket delivery. If you wanted takeaway delivery that may limit you a bit more, but there's still vast areas to choose from.

Specific locations are going to be budget dependent.

Few people are actually happy living like hermits though. It's not something I'd recommend as a knee-jerk reaction.

What exactly is it you are trying to get away from? Most people are decent and nice to be around, don't like the internet fool you.

I know it’s a different country, but having friendly near neighbours is worth their weight in gold when things go south out in the sticks.

I have 2 tiny village shops within a 5-6 minute drive, 15 minutes on a pushbike (which I don’t have) or 25-30 minutes walk. If I’d been unable to drive during the recent month of 35-40°C days and I didn’t have a support network around me, I’d have been ******.

Plan wisely, then have a couple of sensible folks review your plan.

I'm not sure if this thread should go in General or the Home forum.

Basically I've hit a point where I really want to get away from people. I want to live in a small (one bed) house somewhere remote which is reasonably cheap (compared with Surrey). My only real requirements is good internet access and a shower. I've been looking at random places on Rightmove but I have no idea what I am looking for. Ideally it would be a detached with a substantial gap between houses so I don't need to worry about neighbours. I don't need a garden at all and as long as I can get food delivered I'd be happy.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

If you need any additional information then please let me know and I'll try and provide it.
my work colleagues brother has moved up to one of the remote islands off scotland.... i cant remember which one, I want to say inner rather than outer Hebrides but if i am honest it is a bit of a guess.. He must have somewhat passable internet as he WFH using it. It certainly ticks the remote box anyway

Could move to another country, if you have say £200,000 total savings, that could go further in another country.
I dont mean to hijack..... (but i will anyway :D ) but this has always been my dream when i retire and my lad moves out to his own place- which is only 10 years off now (retirement... no idea about the lad)

I always fancied Menorca but not that fussy so long as Mediterranean ..... however not sure how easy that is these days since we are no longer in the EU.. also the wife may take some persuading

Unless you go really remote you'll still have to deal with a fair bit of human BS sadly.

The lack of local amenities can take its toll unless you are of a specific mindset, especially if used to relying on them.

Internet provisioning these days is pretty hit and miss - I live in a relatively rural part of the South West and we just got FTTP a few weeks back, but most of our neighbours are stuck with ADSL, varying 4G quality, 50Mbit wireless or Starlink.

While in the north it tends to result in lower house prices, around here in the south at least the more rural areas tend to be eye wateringly expensive and often high council tax, etc. and other maintenance costs.

Persuading won’t be enough. If your OH isn’t totally on board from the get go, it will only end in tears. Seen it happen to other Brits in France.

Never underestimate the magnetic pull of grandchildren on the womenfolk either.

When asked how much of the UK was 'developed' most people asked estimated around 20-30%. The actual answer is around 3%. Outside the cities, and especially up north, Scotland and Mid/North Wales there's a whole lot of not much at all.

Also look into parish costs, if the local church needs work then everyone in the parish has to pay the extra for it.

You can get insurance which covers this.

To the OP - to be honest it's not something I would consider if I couldn't drive (unless there were reasonable & reliable public transport links within say 10 minutes walk; and by "reasonable" I mean at least once/hour, not once a day like some rural areas!).

However, we are considering a similar plan in a few years, and my vote would be for Wales, due to both house prices and proximity to the sea.

I love wales...... if you can either work remotely or are retired Wales has a huge amount going for it. My dad helped my grandad build a house who owned part of the beach and a large plot of land along Menai straits on Anglesey so i spent a lot of time there as a child. South wales is nice too but North wales is where i would look (but that is just my bias of my childhood i think)
Depending where you go it may take some time to win the locals over however.... A lot of them do not like the English moving in on their turf..... Nothing like walking into a pub where everyone is speaking English and seeing them swap to welsh once they know you are English.

Good thread this! I also would like to live in a more remote place and more away from people, which I think is the crux of the issue. General "people" in the UK are what is ruining the place. A change in attitudes, behaviours, entitlement, selfishness etc.
Define remote though...
I always feel like I'd love to live in a house where there are no neighbours within hearing distance so I can't be disturbed and can also make as much noise as I want too. Fine. But when it's so remote that popping up the shop for some milk is a "get in the car and drive 15 minutes" job, that could get tiresome. Don't know till I've tried it I suppose.
